James Snyder Obituary

Snyder, James E. LATHAM James E. Snyder, son of the late John and Katherine (Walsh) Snyder, entered into Eternal Life on February 28, 2014. He was born on December 25, 1935 in Elmhurst, NY. Jim was a graduate of St. Bonaventure University and was associated with Siena College for 50 years. During that time he helped to implement the Big Brothers and Sisters program that later blossomed into the Siena Mentoring Program, which has served thousands of children from the Albany area who were matched to Siena student volunteers. The devotion of generations of Siena students to serving urban youth was a powerful force in Jim's life. He cherished the generosity of spirit of the Siena Community. Jim is survived by his wife and best friend of forty years, Teresa Thayer Snyder; his beloved children, Jonathan, Amy (Stephen) Hegener, Christine, and Zachary; his granddaughter, Olivia Snyder, and the countless sons and daughters and brothers and sisters he picked up along the way through his gently, compassionate nature. He is also survived by his brother, the Most Reverend John J. Snyder, retired Bishop of St. Augustine, Fla. He is predeceased by his brother, Eugene P. Snyder, who died in World War II. Jim was a kind and gentle soul who loved being with his family, friends, and neighbors, and of course he had a special place in his heart for his beloved dogs. Funeral services Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 10 a.m. from Lasak & Gigliotti Funeral Home, now located at 208 North Allen Street, Albany thence to St. Mary of the Angels Chapel at Siena College at 10:30 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated. A beauiful man. I lived with James for 2 years. He was a gentle man, but with clear and strong ideas on how we Franciscans should live and impact society. His memory lives on in the social outreach that bears his name as well as his lasting character.

Teresa, Jonathan and Amy, Christine and Zachary, I share my faith with you that your husband, Teresa, and your father, Jonathan, Amy, Christine and Zachary, lives with Christ. I lived with him at Siena when he was a friar. He was always a model and a mentor for me as we witnessed against the Vietnam War, as we sought ways of eliminating poverty. His commitment to the Big Brothers and Sisters was inspirational. He never lost his passion for the youngsters and their families. I was sad when he left the friars but I knew that he would bring his passion and his love to a wife and family. And indeed that has been the case. Thank you for him. May he rest in Peace. To The Snyder Family, my deepest, heartfelt condolences to you all. As you all know, Jim was not only a friend of the family but a mentor to myself and my entire family. He was my confirmation sponsor, he baptized my daughter and was a true hero in countless peoples lives. The love, dedication, commitment and devotion he showed to myself, my family and the entire Big Brothers, Big Sisters Organization and family can never be repaid. May God lay a heavy hand on your hearts during this time and if there is anything I can do, please let me know. Godspeed to a true hero.

My sincere condolences to the family you are in my thoughts and prayers. Jim was the definition of a great man, he was someone who was so easy to lookup to. I had the pleasure of being a mentor while at Siena. Every Saturday morning during the mentoring program he would make a point to say hello to everyone and specifically ask them about how they were doing and what was going on. He always had kind words and encouragement to give and a huge smile on his face. The four years of mentoring was so valuable to me and helped shape me into who I am today, what I was able to take away from the time with the mentoring program was so much more than any classroom teachings. If it wasn't for Jim's encouragement I would not be where I am today. He truly will be missed.

Jim was such a important part of so many of our kids lives. My three learned so much from him and the mentoring program. They met friends that they keep through out childhood and now into adulthood. What a true blessing he was. Bringing joy and lessons to each of the youth and adults alike that he came in contact with. You will truly be missed. I am confident your work has only started and you are moving on to new teaching next to our Lord. Condolences to your family and friends.

To Jim's family: You have our deepest and heartfelt sympathy, and we share in your loss of a great friend, father, and mentor. As you know Jim was a great mentor and friend to my family and especially to me and my boys. Jim was the best - who always managed a smile, a corny joke and a hug if you needed one. He was a great friend, easy to talk to, always supportive when you needed him, the best boss I ever had - easy to work for (BBBS). Jim was a great father and a father figure to his children and the many children in Capital Region. Truly one of God's jewels that shined here on earth. Jim will always be missed and cherished in our hearts. Thank you for sharing your husband, father, friend, home and time with us.
Much love and prayers,
JoEllen, Jeshua, Jordan, & Jayda White

My condolences to the Snyder family. Jim was a beacon of light and was one of the few I knew that advocated highly for young, disenfranchised youth. Jim was a father to so many young girls and boys from single parent homes and those that were less fortunate. He was truly genuine and kind. I will miss his unexpected visits to my office just to talk. Jim loved to talk. He was the best unexpected distraction to my days because he helped me put life into perspective. He was my mentor and friend above everything. I now wish I had received more visits from him. I will miss him tremendously. You all must be so proud of him. May Jim rest and peace and continue to talk it up in Heaven.

Mrs. Snyder, Jon, Amy, Christine and Zach I was blown away when I got the news. I am terribly sorry for your loss.

Your Husband and Father was a man I knew only when us guys (Steve T., Mike K., Zach K. and others) would visit your house during our addolescence. Mr. Snyder always had a kind word of encouragement or a smart comment for us and I will never forget that.

I feel lucky to have known him.

My condolences to Teresa and the Snyder family. I'm keeping your family in my prayers. Jim will be sorely missed by those who loved and knew him. He touched many peoples lives, including mine! I was a camper at the Big Brothers and Sisters camp at Siena College many, many years ago! He was Father Jim then. He had such a profound effect and impact on the inner-city youth through the Big Brothers and Sisters Camp. I cannot imagine how many lives he actually saved from being in the streets! He worked diligently at the office to secure the necessary funding needed to keep this youth program up and running, year after year, to keep the children safe and off the streets of Albany. The Camp use to run for the full entire Summer right after the 4th of July! Providing a safe haven for parents to send their children to learn (yes, I said learn, it was required that each week we put in a certain amount of time in reading and math classes at camp!) We learned to be competitive in sports while respecting each other and we learned to be creative in art class. He not only provided a safe haven for the children but also provided well needed jobs for the former campers as counselors and junior counselors. He certainly touched my life in a profound way. Jim always had a smile on his face and a gentle spirit along with the necessary patience to assist a whole bunch of children with whatever was going on at that moment. You would find Jim at one of our field trips flipping burgers on the grill and providing us with a hot meal. It takes a village to raise a child and Jim was right in there helping the many children within the inner-city of Albany and the parents as well, while guiding us onto a positive course and providing parents with whatever assistance he could provide. Thank you Father Jim for all that you have done for me and the community. I say "Father" now because he was like a Father to so many! Job well done! I know that your family and children are very proud of you! It is your time to Rest! Thank you for all that you have done for us!
