Joan Nielsen

TROY - It is with heavy hearts that the Nielsen family of Seventh Ave., in Lansingburgh, announces the death of our dear wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Joan C. Carr Nielsen, aka "Joanie Baloney," passed away on April 15, 2025. She was born in Troy, N.Y., on December 24, 1930. She was the daughter of Frank Carr and Martha Jeavons Carr. She was a proud graduate of School One. Joan chose to go to Lansingburgh High School, where she met the love of her life, Andrew E. Nielsen. They married on July 1, 1951, in Christ and Saint Barnabas Church in Troy, N.Y. In 2021, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with family from around the country. Joan and Andy had a wonderful life together. They ran the Green Island Pharmacy for 35 years and Joan Nielsen Antiques for over 40 years. They were world travelers and never sat still for long. Their adventures included all of Europe, Russia, China, India, Egypt, Thailand and Vietnam. They saw it all. Their love of family was most important to them. They were strong, silent supporters in all family matters.
Joan is survived by her husband, Andrew; her three children, Andrew F. Nielsen (Joyce), Martha Nielsen (Terrance McHugh), and Scott Nielsen (Mary) also survive. She said the years all the kids were around were the happiest of her life. In addition to her immediate family, she leaves behind her grandchildren, Sarah Collins, Andrew C. Nielsen and Peter Nielsen; and her great-grandchildren, Lily Nielsen, Kate Nielsen and Andrew T. Nielsen; her cousins, Barbara Carr and Charlotte Westhead; and her nieces, Laura Quesada and Ellen Peppas also survive and have been a source of inspiration and courage throughout the last phase of her life. Finally, the Nielsen family wishes to thank the staff at Van Rensselaer Manor in Unit A1 and B1 for all their help, love and support. There are so many but Katie, Kacey, Curtis, Maria, Lisa the Stacys, Jennifer, Kerri, Sarah, Terry and Jess have been so kind and caring. Mom was happy there because it was fun and she didn't have to do housework.
There will be a private funeral at Trinity Church in Lansingburgh.
