John Cromie Obituary

Cromie, John "Jack" Coffey ALBANY, N.Y. On October 2, 2009 in Albany, John "Jack" Coffey Cromie died of his illness, in an accident. At the time of his death, Jack was full of hope and love, with exciting plans for the future. The son of William J. Cromie, MD and Cynthia P. Cromie, Jack was born in Philadelphia on July 5, 1972. A graduate of Albany High School, he studied classics at the University of Chicago. Jack completed a tour of duty in the United States Coast Guard, serving in Sitka, Alaska and Seattle, Wash. A man of many interests and talents, Jack trans-lated ancient Greek and Latin literature, wrote poetry, enjoyed all things associated with boating and recently built a wooden boat in Mich. Jack was a crab fisherman in Alaska's Bering Sea, hiked the Adirondack High Peaks and the Appalachian Trail, ran the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in an 18-foot paddle raft, kayaked the Acadia National Park in Maine and completed the Adirondack 90-mile canoe race in a two man canoe. He continued his studies in the classics and mechanical engineering at the University of Maine, SUNY Albany, HVCC, RPI and Boston University. Jack was beloved by his large, extended family and many friends. He is survived by his mother and father; his siblings, Daniel Cromie and wife Susan, Clare O'Toole and husband Laurence, Virginia Cromie and William Cromie Jr. He is also survived by his niece, Katherine Cromie and nephews, William Cromie and Darren O'Toole. A private family funeral was held on October 7 at Holy Mother and Child Church in Lake Luzerne, N.Y. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Corinth, N.Y. A memorial service for Jack will be held on Saturday, November 28 at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 900 Madison Avenue, Albany, N.Y. Doc,Cynthia,Dan,Claire,Jenny & Billy, I was so saddened to hear of Jack's death. Many memories came flashing before my eyes, times up at camp, house on Lake, the lights out negotiations and his ability to get Jenny & Billy to fall on the floor in a heap of giggles and shrieks of laughter! The times I spent with your children are some of my fondest memories. The love, respect and joy they exhibited everyday towards you and each other is a true testiment to your love and faith. My prayers are with all of you- I know your faith will guide you through this chapter in your lives. All my love and prayers,Louise aka D'weeze

To the Cromie Family,
Our family was devastated to hear of Jack's passing. As a student at St. Gregory's he was a bright, joyful, kind and gregarious boy. He was well liked by everyone. Later, he went on to AHS where he continued to be a bright, shinning star. Jack was a reflection of all the love and caring that the Cromie family instilled in their children.
Our deepest condolences and sympathy to all of you at this very difficult time. He will be missed. May his memory be eternal.

We are deeply saddened by your tragic and senseless loss. While it has been years since we pulled off the Empire State Regatta, our memories, respect and fondness for you and your exceptional family remain vivid. We know that the loss of a child is the most incomprehensible of all, but also that your faith and support will be there, along with a symphony of friends.

With Love,

October 9, 2009

Dear Cromie Family,

Words can not express my sympathy for the loss of Jack. When I heard the news, my heart was emptied. I was speechless. He was one of the most genuine and nice people I've known and now that he's gone, not having him in this world puts a huge hole in my heart. I'm not sure if mere words will bring you comfort, but just know well that he was as pure an individual as they come. Memories of us playing soccer together and paling around at St. Gregory's and Albany High School will always be with me.

May his memory be eternal.

All of my love to your family. I will be thinking about your family and Jack for weeks to come. Please stay strong and know that my family and I are here for you anytime and our thoughts will be with you.

With Much Love,
Mark Dallas

Jack was a lovely guy, a good friend, full of ideas, a gentle spirit, and a face you were always happy to see. The first time he applied to the University of Chicago, he was not accepted, and in response wrote them so charming, persuasive and heartfelt a letter that they changed their minds and accepted him! I thought that had to be a first in the history of college, something only Jack would have pulled off. I had not seen Jack in over 10 years, and I am so terribly sorry to hear that he died. You are all in my prayers.
