NOTRE DAME, Ind. Brother John William Donoghue, C.S.C., died on the morning of Friday, August 27, 2004. At the time of his death, Brother John was a resident of Dujarie House, the infirmary of the Brothers of Holy Cross at Notre Dame, Indiana. John William Donoghue was born in Springfield, Mass., on April 8, 1915. He was the third of four children of Thomas and Elizabeth (Murphy) Donoghue. He was educated in local schools, graduating from Cathedral High School in Springfield in June 1933. After leaving high school he worked at different times at Union Mills Inc., General Electric and the Boston and Albany Railroad. John entered the Congregation of Holy Cross as a candidate for the brotherhood on September 12, 1938 at St. Joseph Juniorate, Valatie, N.Y. He received the habit at the beginning of his novitiate year at Our Lady of Holy Cross Novitiate in North Dartmount, Mass. At that time he was given the name of Brother Mansuetus. In later years, he reverted to his baptismal name of John William. He made his first vows on February 2, 1940 and made perpetual profession on August 16, 1943 at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame, Indiana. Brother John received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in June 1943 and a master of arts degree also from Notre Dame in August 1952. The greater part of his active ministry was spent in the education apostolate in schools conducted by the Brothers of Holy Cross. He taught in schools in Ind., Wis., Ohio, N.Y,., Conn., Mass., Md., and Rome, Italy. He was the founding principal of two schools, St. Edward's High School in Lakewood, Ohio and Holy Cross High School in Flushing, N.Y. From 1962 to 1968, Brother John served as the Provincial Superior of the Eastern Province of Holy Cross Brothers. In later years, when he no longer was involved in teaching, he devoted his time and talents to maintenance and grounds work at different community schools. Brother John retired to St. Joseph Center, Valatie, N.Y. in September, 2000. The following year he moved to Dujarie House Infirmary, Notre Dame, at which place he died. Brother John was predeceased by his older brothers, Thomas of Dedham, Mass. and Father Ignatius O.P.M., a missionary in Brazil. He is survived by his brother, Colonel F.J. Donoghue (Ret.) of Dunedin, Fla. and his sister, Mrs. Joseph Connors of Manchester, Conn. A wake and funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 30 at the chapel of Dujarie House Infirmary, Notre Dame, Ind. On Tuesday evening, August 31, a wake will be held at St. Joseph Center, Valatie from 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Joseph Center Chapel at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 1. Interment will follow in the Holy Cross Community Cemetery on the grounds of St. Joseph Center. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Valatie.
