John McTague Obituary

McTague, John Joseph Jr. DADE CITY, Fla. Dr. John J. "Jack" McTague, 77, an Albany native who spent most of his career as a history professor at Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Fla., passed away peacefully at home with family on February 11, 2022, after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. John was born in Albany, the first of John and Eileen (Fitzsimmons) McTague's five children. After completing high school at Vincentian Institute in Albany, he earned a bachelor's degree from Siena College in Loudonville, a master's degree from Fordham University in New York City, and a Ph.D. in history from the University at Buffalo. John spent 44 years as a well-loved history professor at Saint Leo before retiring in 2020. He was passionate about teaching, but his interests extended far beyond the classroom. He was active in community theater for many years, and cherished his long-time role as a drummer and later guitarist with a popular local band called Time Warp. He traveled extensively, having visited 42 countries, often with groups that included like-minded history buffs. He spent several weeks each year in Albany, where he enjoyed reconnecting with family and friends. His professional affiliations included leadership positions with the United Faculty of Florida and membership in the Florida Conference of Historians. John was predeceased by his parents, John and Eileen McTague. He is survived by his wife, Kristina McTague; his stepdaughter, Elizabeth Porter; his brother, Timothy of New York City (Mary Stutzman); and sisters, Maureen Dana (Lawrence) of Saratoga Springs, Sheila Addison (David) of Delancey, N.Y., and Karen Maxim (Stephen) of Lake George. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews, who have fond childhood memories of adventurous games of hide-and-seek at their grandmother's house, orchestrated by their fun-loving Uncle John. Also surviving are eight great-nieces and great-nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 23, at the St. Leo Abbey at the university. A reception will follow on the campus. Those wishing to remember John in a special way may send a contribution to the Heritage Arts Center Association Inc., an arts group he served as a volunteer for some 30 years. The address is P.O. Box 1131, Dade City, FL, 33526, or online at heritagearts.org.

I'm sorry I'm late in posting this, but I just signed up for the Saint Leo alumni group on Facebook and spotted the sad news. Dr. McTague was one of the absolute best teachers at Saint Leo. He kept things lively and interesting. Besides our mutual love of history, we also had a love of sports. Dr. McTague dabble in sports writing a bit and I later made a career out of it. Since I was still in the area, I'd run into him at Ralph's or Publix at times and he'd start asking me questions about sports writing. I did my best to fill the role of teacher. But I know I didn't close to being the kind of teacher he was. He'll be missed by the entire Saint Leo community and many generations.

Dr. McTague was one of a kind. When I first arrived at Saint Leo, I had a tough time transitioning. Dr. McTague was always patient with me. When I got the opportunity to teach the Modern Middle East class, it was a proud moment for me because I got the chance to teach a class that Dr. McTague originated.

Tim, Maureen, Karen, and Sheila, while it has been many, many years since we have all connected, I have very fond memories of our youth on Hanes St. As long-standing supporters of Siena´s men´s basketball team, I would see John annually at a game during the Christmas holidays. I always enjoyed these encounters. It was an opportunity to maintain the earlier family connections and it gave us both an opportunity to catch up on the families. He was always very warm, receptive, low key but forthright in these brief visits. I always enjoyed hearing how all of you were doing. As a history major, I always wished I could sit in one of his classes. His bio is that of a fascinating and accomplished man. I´m so sorry for your loss. I know he´ll be missed by many. May he RIP.

Dr. McTague was one of the best teaches I had at St. Leo. I particularly enjoyed his class on Western Civilization. Super interesting and always willing to take time out for a laugh or two. Cracked open a few beers with him on several occasions. I remember him fondly. RIP Doc

I do not have words. Dr. McTague was one of my favorite professors, and I always had a great time in his class. He was a very kind-hearted individual who was more than happy to take all viewpoints into consideration.

Doc McTague was absolutely my favorite professor. He and Dr Horgan nominated and made possible for me to attend the National Symposium on the Study of The Presidency in Washington D.C. my senior year at Saint Leo. I loved seeing him year after year at reunions but could never call him "Jack" as he said i could. It was just a matter of respect on my part. He made my college years interesting and fulfilling and my lifelong love if history began with Dr. McTague. He never changed. He was the best of SLC/SLU and he´s already schooling angels at this point. Thank you, you were much more than a teacher to me and your door was always open to me.
