John Murphy Obituary

Murphy, Rev. John J. TROY Rev. John J. Murphy, 80, passed into eternal life on Tuesday evening, February 16, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Troy, Father John was the son of the late John J. Murphy Sr. and Helen Walsh Murphy. Father graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy and he attended Siena College in Loudonville. He was in the seminary at St. Andrew's in Rochester from 1949-1951 and St. Bernard's in Rochester from 1953-1957. Father John was ordained by Bishop William Scully on June 1, 1957 at the Cathedral in Albany and his first Mass was celebrated on June 2, 1957 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Troy. His first assignment was at St. Peter's Church in Delhi as an associated pastor from 1957-1958. Father then became an associate at St. James Church in Albany from 1958-1971, then became pastor of St. Patrick's Church in Catskill from 1971-2005. Father John served 34 years as pastor at St. Patrick's, a commendation called him very visible, undaunted, steadfast, a rock who will not crumble, despite the challenges God had set before him. Father John had a familiar saying "Oh Happy Days." Father John played a significant role in the lives of the people that he met. As a priest, he had brought the word of God and had exemplified the teachings of Christ by his simplicity, sincerity and fairness to all. From baptisms, first communions, weddings and funerals, he had been a very visible member of each family. As a person, Father John was certainly unique, he was always there with a cheerful smile and warm greeting and helped to brighten everyone's day. His willingness to join in whatever needed to be done had endeared him to the hearts of all who knew him. He was respected by all denominations. He became a local legend in the Albany, Catskill and Troy areas. Father John had a summer camp in Hadley, N.Y., which he called "Hadley on the Hudson." Every year on July 4, family and friends from the Catskill and Albany areas would come together to celebrate Father's birthday. Father John, we thank you for your encouragement, spirituality and dedication, for sharing your talents and touching our lives and your sincerity as a priest, teacher and friend. Our love and prayers will always be with you. In addition to Father John's mother and father, he was predeceased by three sisters, Ann Murphy Costello, Helen Murphy Kavanaugh and Catherine Murphy Cioffi. Father is survived by a brother, Thomas Murphy; a sister-in-law, Mary Costello and a brother-in-law, Anthony (Tony) Cioffi; and many nieces, nephews; and cousins. Father John had many close friends especially Father James Vaughan and Father Richard Jacobs. The family would like to especially thank Father James Vaughan, St. Mary's Hospital, 6th floor, the cardiac unit, Dr. Karatnycky, all the nurses and the 5th floor Hospice unit for their kindness during Father John's illness. The reception of Father John's body will take place at Sacred Heart Church in Troy, Sunday, February 21 at 4 p.m. The funeral liturgy for Father John will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Troy, with Bishop Howard J. Hubbard, bishop of Albany, as the principal celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may call at the church Sunday from 4-8 p.m. Father will be interred with his mother and father at the family cemetery lot in St. Mary's Cemetery in Troy. Contributions in Father Murphy's memory may be made to Sacred Heart Church, 310 Spring Avenue, Troy, NY 12180. Arrangements by the Bocketti Funeral Home, 336 Third Street, Troy.

Father Murphy was the most loved, admired, and revered priest that most of us will ever know. He had an unforgettable laugh, and a sense of humor, and optimism that was contagious. I'm proud to say I served many a mass as an altar boy for Father Murphy, back in the early 60s at Saint James. He was my favorite priest, among some great ones, and he still is. He helped our family, and so many others,in our hour of need. He represents all that is good in the Catholic Church to me, and ranks right up there with John Paul II in my book. What an extraordinary man! Enjoy yourself in Heaven Father; you most certainly deserve it.

How can one describe such a wonderful human being that gave so much to everyone he touched. You Father Murphy will never be forgotten, you have instilled in so many of us that grew up in Saint James parish the meaning of our faith and love for each other. How blessed St. Patrick's was to get such a good man. May you rest in peace with the angels!

There aren't enough kind words to express what a wonderful man Fr. Murphy was. Twelve years in St. Patrick's School and Father was a very positive, caring, loving priest that accepted us for who we were. His wonderful sense of humor, his inspiring words, and his beautiful smile will remain in my memories forever. As an adult, I would run into Father once in a while at the grocery store or out and about in town, and he always remembered exactly who I was (name and all). I always thought how special it was for him to have touched so many children's lives and remember each and every one of us. Rest in peace Father and continue to watch over us.

Father Murphy played a very large roll in my life growing up. He was there for my first communion, my wedding, my niece's funeral, and my son's baptism. He was a wonderful man and I really enjoyed the presence he brought with him wherever he went. He will be very missed.

St. Pat's was in our neighborhood when we lived in Catskill. Sometimes we would go for walks and see Father Murphy working outside. He also was very supportive of whatever the choir wanted to sing during Mass. We always had our version of songs that we would sing, which was a new and improved version from what was in the hymnals. Father Murphy brings back some wonderful memories.
I am saddened by what is happening in Catskill, and to St. Pat's in particular. My current parish is going through a state of transition, as well. I will continue to pray for vocations.

I was working for St. Patrick's when I became ill and was hospitalized for an extended period of time..four months to be exact. Fr. Murphy paid me all during that time, so that my family didn't go without. We will always honor, appreciate and love him for that. "Everybody's Here", but were all missing you, Father Murphy!

I will him miss him greatly, he was there from my baptism to my confirmation, but unfortunately not for my wedding! Father Murphy made this little town a better place for all even on the worst of days. He was and always will be the pastor of St. Patrick's Church.

Fr. Murphy has been a part of my life since I was 7 years old. He was a part of all of my sacraments except baptism and death. He was a treasure sent from God to our little town and will not soon be forgotten. There are not enough words to describe him let alone space in the text. I just want his family to know what a teasure and comfort he was to all of us. He was a true servant of God and his people. I will forever remember him fondly with a smile on my face and a grateful heart that I was blessed to have him in my life. I know there is an angel up above watching over Catskill as he rests peacefully with the angels.

Father Murphy was an icon in the Catskill community. He welcomed everyone into St. Patrick's Church with open arms. Our church has not been the same since Father left - he was loved by so many. He is the true example of what a priest should be. Your family is in the thoughts and hearts of so many in our community.

Truly a good man. I doubt anyone who met him, has ever forgotten him.

February 22, 2010

I was a teenager at St. James when Fr. Murphy and his good friend, Fr. Jillisky, were priests there in the late 1950s and 1960s. They were two of the best priests I've ever known - hard working, dedicated, and compassionate. We hoped that Fr. Murphy would become our pastor in 1970, but our loss was Catskill's gain. I'm glad that they loved him and appreciated him as much as we did. May both of these good men now enjoy the fruits of their labors - together again.

After moving from Leeds in the early 80's and Leaving St Bridgets we never found another priest quite like Father Murphy. He will always be a part of our family memories!

In the mid 1960s, the boys of St. James Parish affectionately referred to Father Murphy as "Pop Murphy". Whether we were playing basketball, baseball or kickball in the church lot, when that black & white 1957 Chevy pulled in, we knew father Murphy would be taking off his black suit coat, rolling up his sleeves and joining in with us. Occasionally a small group of us was treated to ice cream, or an afternoon of fishing. He was a good man doing good works. We'll miss Father Murphy but always remember his words and good deeds.

You worked so hard at St. Pat's but always with a smile and never a complaint. Now you can rest with the angels. God Bless you Fr. Murphy.

With love, a faithful parishoner.

How I shall miss this man of God. For as long as I have known him he has shown me kindness, compassion, understanding, forgiveness, respect and never one negative word of criticism. He provided me a place to live, a home to enjoy, a love and fraternal concern to treasure. At my worst of trials and tribulations, at my moments of sorrow and loss, he was there with that encouraging smile and simple words of positive wisdom. A real man, a real priest, a real icon of our Catskill Parish and region. He shall be missed and I can only hope he is praying for all of us in Catskill to have an improved religious situation.

I remember the summer of '76. We both shared a spot on the same softball team in Catskill, NY. Most of us didn't really know this man nor of his athletic ability. It didn't take much time before the team realised that John was a special player with special tallents. He was our right fielder and the only team member to play this game without the use of a glove. That's right, bare-handed. Father John, although we didn't win the championship that year, thanks to you and your wisdom we claimed victory in so many other areas in life. You are now playing in God's "Field of Dreams" and your legacy will continue to live on in our hearts. God bless you my friend.

Throughout my life, Fr. Murphy always provided a good message, sermons we could take home and use for that week. He showed me where to find the strength and instilled in me that we are never alone. Thank you for always being there for me and my family. You shall always be missed. Thank you God for this good man. May he always be at peace with You.

You gave me direction in my time of greatest need, and called me "Teach" because you couldn't remember my name. You made me feel special. I'll always remember the way you entertained and taught the students at school masses. Thank you for bringing me back to the church and for building the art room.

Father John Murphy was loved by the entire Catskill community, and the people here are in mourning over his death. I was very lucky to spend many weekends serving with him at the altar and assisting him at the parish with everything from Baptisms to typing letters! He was a real priest who cared about the people of Catskill. Father was very humbled after finding out that the "little school" was now named after him...the Father Murphy Parish Center. May the peace of Christ be with him now for all he did for Catskill.

Fr.Murphy leaves behind a legacy in Greene Co. He worked so hard for everyone in the community. As a student of St. Pat's, he always made the masses fun and unlifting for the children, so we could understand the Liturgy. He worked so hard; both physically and spirtually. He will be missed by many...
