Bogdanowicz, Joseph W. (Slavin) ALBANY Joseph W. (Slavin) Bogdanowicz, 83, entered eternal life Monday, July 26, 2021, at Shaker Place. Born in Hartford, Conn. he was the beloved son of the late John and Dorothea Slavin Bogdanowicz. Joe was a proud 1957 graduate of St. John's High School in the South End of Albany. He attended St. John's University where he played basketball. He graduated from Russell Sage College, and earned his master's degree in education from UAlbany. Joe served in the Spearhead Division of the U.S. Army. Joe retired from the Albany City School District after many years as a sixth grade teacher at School 16, and where he affectionately was known at "Mr. B" by all his students. Joe was an avid golfer, reader and Red Sox fan. He was a friend to all at Capital Hills Golf Course and Martel's Restaurant where he was known as "The Bagger." He loved his family and especially spending time with his cherished grandchildren. Joe proudly served on the Albany Water Board under Mayor Jerry Jennings. He loved the City of Albany and often referred to Albany as "The Emerald City." He was the beloved father of Nicole Marschilok; cherished and dedicated grandfather of Emma and Zachary Marschilok; godfather of Christopher McCoy; stepson of the late Samuel Poggoli; and dear friend of Roger and Katherine Martel. Joe is also survived by countless friends, teaching colleagues, former students and chosen family and was fondly known as "Uncle Joe." Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Joe's family on Thursday, July 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen St., Albany. Please only enter the funeral home from the rear parking lot entrance; unvaccinated individuals must wear a mask and practice social distancing. Funeral services on Friday, July 30, at 10:30 a.m. in the Historic Church of St. Mary on Capitol Hill where his funeral Mass will be celebrated. The Rite of Committal will be held in the Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont immediately following the funeral Mass.
