Joseph Herbst Obituary

Herbst, Joseph
DOVER, Del. - Joseph Patrick Herbst, 66, passed away suddenly on December 20, 2024. Born on July 10, 1958, in Albany, he was the son of the late Edward Herbst Sr. and Irene (Murdick) Herbst; and stepson of the late Joseph Gruber.
Joe was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany for several years with the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment. Joe also went on to serve for several years in the N.Y. and Del. National Guard. Over the years, Joe worked for several sales and manufacturing companies, and was currently employed by REEB Millwork, where he loved his job and coworkers.
Joe is survived by his children, Jessica (Jason) Miller of Albany and Kira (Lily) Herbst of Schwenksville, Pa.; and grandchildren, Brendan and Brayden Miller. Additionally, Joe is survived by his partner, Maria Basco; and siblings, Elizabeth Vandenburgh, George (Helen) Herbst, Karl Herbst Sr., James (Beth) Herbst Sr., whom Joe considered his best friend, and Leo (Lori) Herbst Sr. Joe is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by brothers, Edward Herbst Jr. and William Herbst.
Joe was always up for a good time. He loved animals, the beach, fishing, grilling, and a nice cold beer. He was a generous and loving father and a great friend, who listened without judgment. Joe had a big personality with an even bigger laugh, and he left an impression on everyone he met. Joe leaves behind an immense sadness that will be felt by all who knew and loved him, and his memory will be cherished for the years to come.
Services for Joe were held privately at the request of his family upon his arrival back in N.Y., and were entrusted to the Konicek & Collett Funeral Home LLC., Watervliet.

Eternal rest grant unto Joseph, O Lord,
and let Your perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed
rest in peace.

Amen.

Dear Karl, Jimmy, and the entire Herbst family,

Having moved away from Albany years ago, I often find myself reminiscing of days gone by. Many fond memories of my youth occurred on the streets of our old neighborhood. As brothers, friends, and neighbors, we speak frequently of the "PRICELESS" accounts of our childhood during the 1960's and 70's when our generation were emerging "baby boomers." The fun, adventure, and education we received in Arbor Hill and West Hill was something WE created, not manufactured for us! I wouldn't trade those days for anything in the world.

I recall when Joey went off to boot camp, and of course, his safe return at the end of his enlistment. As a fellow veteran, I PRAISE his service in the United States Army.

Your brother Joey was a part of that era in our lives. I pray your family remains eternally grateful for those special years during our youth. He had a magnanimous personality and was a valiant soldier.

When I hear a bugle playing the military 'TAPS' again, know that I will be thinking of Joey, and each of you with a tearful heart.

Rest in Peace faithful servant,
