Joseph R. Scully

Scully, Joseph R. LAKE GEORGE Joseph Richard Scully, 81, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2011, at his home. Born on November 9, 1929, in Rensselaer, N.Y., he was the son of the late John J. Scully and Emma M. (Warman) Scully. Mr. Scully graduated from Van Rensselaer High School, received his B.S. from Russell Sage College, Troy (the evening division); and in 1958, he graduated from Albany Law School. He was a partner in the former Albany law firm of Oliver, Scully and Delaney. Mr. Scully was an elected member of the Albany County Legislature, serving for two terms, resigning in 1970, to be appointed clerk of the U.S. District Court, Northern District of New York and in 1974, was appointed as a U.S. Magistrate Judge, remaining in these positions until retiring in 1990, from the judiciary. Mr. Scully was a member of the Albany County Bar Association, Albany Elks Lodge #49 for over 50 years and also a member of the Warren County Sheriff's Office for over 22 years. He was an avid skier and was a boating enthusiast on Lake George. Mr. Scully was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church of Lake George. He is predeceased by one brother, John T. Scully and sister-in-law, Jean Scully. Survivors include one niece, Susan Scully, of Boston, Mass. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 50 Mohican Street, Lake George, with the Rev. Nellis Tremblay, officiating. A Rite of Committal will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Birch Avenue, Lake George. At Mr. Scully's request, there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of Stafford Funeral Home, Inc., of Lake George.
