LATHAM - Joyce Ann Hempstead, 81, passed away peacefully, at her home, on September 24, 2025, after a brief illness.
She was born November 20, 1943, in El Paso, Texas, to the late John and Margaret Rector, while her father was serving in the U.S. Army.
Joyce grew up in her mother's home state of Tenn., and Rotterdam, graduating from Mohonasen High School. After completing the Troy School of Beauty Culture, she spent her entire career as a hair dresser and owner of her own salon in Latham. Joyce was dedicated to her field, volunteering with the Look Good Feel Better program to help cancer patients with hair loss solutions, and later helping out the next generation of cosmetologists by proctoring student exams at BOCES. A long-time member of the Latham Community Baptist Church, she enjoyed shopping, fashion, exercise and especially spending time with (and spoiling) her grandchildren.
Joyce was predeceased by her beloved husband of 48 years, Robert Hempstead. She is survived by her son, Mark (Eileen) Hempstead of Glenville; her sister, Janice (Ronald) Hopkins; her grandchildren, Madison, Carter and Lincoln; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, from 4-7 p.m., at New Comer Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie, N.Y. 12205. A remembrance service will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at Latham Community Baptist Church, 109 Forts Ferry Road, Latham, N.Y. 12110. Interment to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
