Lorin Scott Obituary

Scott, Lorin "Scotty" SCHENECTADY Lorin G. Scott, 91, entered into eternal life on May 4, 2013. Known to many as "Scotty", Lorin was born in Schenevus, N.Y. on May 16, 1921 and was a son of the late Floyd A. and Bertha L. Pierce Scott. He was raised on the family farm and, at the age of 16, worked for a local dairy farmer delivering milk. Following his graduation from Davenport High School, Lorin moved to Albany and took employment with the Watervliet Arsenal. With the country in the midst of World War II, Lorin enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and actively served his country from April of 1944 until November of 1945. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of corporal and for his service was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon his return from the military, he worked at the Fort Orange Paper Company, then operated a gas station and motor court with his brother, and then worked for Curtis Circulation. Lorin settled in Colonie and, on June 14, 1951, began a long career in law enforcement with the Town of Colonie Police Department. Initially serving as a desk man, then as motorcycle patrolman, Lorin quickly rose in rank and became a sergeant in the records division. He ultimately achieved the rank of lieutenant and was the communications and records division commander. Lorin, along with Dr. Howard Westney, was instrumental in developing the EMS communications delivery system in Colonie. He later helped to developed REMO which encompassed the entire tri-city area. He was also instrumental in creating the Capital District Emergency Radio Network (C.D.E.R.N.) by which counties were able to directly and immediately communicate with each other at the time of an emergency. In addition, he helped form the Hudson Mohawk Alarm Association along with Jim Hart of Hart Alarms, and was a life member. On January 7, 1984, following a rewarding and accomplished career, "Scotty" retired from the Colonie Police Department. He later worked as a grounds keeper for the Town of Colonie Division of Public Works - Division of Pure Waters on Old Niskayuna Road. Scotty's retirement years found him enjoying quiet times at home, listening to music and had a large collection of it that he listened to, as well as keeping records, and spending good times with his family. Loved and missed, he leaves behind many wonderful memories for his family to be comforted by and to cherish. Scotty was a member and past president of the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO). He also enjoyed membership in the Colonie PBA, Police Conference of New York, Inc., the Colonie Lodge of Elks 2192, the American Motorcycle Association and as a social member of the Verdoy Volunteer Fire Department where he always appreciated being invited to the annual Old Timers Dinner and the hospitality extended to him by the members and auxiliary. He was a long-time communicant of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in the Village of Colonie. He was the beloved husband of the late Ruth E. Flannery Wilkins Scott to whom he was married on December 7, 1957. Together they enjoyed almost 34 years of marriage before her passing on August 7, 1991. He was the loving father of Joan Staffa of Sunrise, Fla., Sharon (Peter) Walter of Saratoga Springs, Nancy (Bob) Rowland of Colonie, Sally (David) Sheldon of Stillwater and David (Tracey) Scott of Colonie; cherished grandfather of Stacey, Kimberly, Doug, Erick, Monika, Chelsea, Evan, Caitlin, Victoria, Danielle, Amanda and Kiersten; dear brother of the late Edward Scott whose wife, Jill Scott Roth of Saratoga Springs survives. Also surviving are 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Bowen & Parker Bros. Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham, where the Reverend Steve Hart, Rector of St. Michael's Episcopal Church will officiate. Interment will be held privately. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Scotty's family on Wednesday from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of customary remembrances, Lorin's family suggests that contributions, in his memory, be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church Building Fund, 49 Killean Park, Colonie, NY 12205, for the purpose of renovating the church columbarium where Lorin will be interred. I am truly sorry to learn about Scotty passing away. We had a nice lunch together with Tom Catino, Ron Olson and Ron Cookingham at the Ingersoll last year. I know he enjoyed our visit as much as we did visiting with him.

Over the years we shared information and helped each other with common problems relating to our profession and communications. Scotty was always willing to help in any way and was a very gracious guy. He was a good cop and will be missed by his friends. My sincere sympathy to his family on their loss.
