Sandman, Margaret (Dugan) ALBANY Margaret Dugan Sandman, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Albany and Harrison, N.Y., died on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at the Chateau at Moorings Park, Naples at the age of 91. Born in Albany, N.Y. on May 5, 1919, she was the daughter of Joseph A. and Anna Walsh Dugan. She was a graduate of Vincentian Institute, where she met her future husband of 64 years, Edgar A. Sandman. After receiving her B.A. from the College of Saint Rose, where she was valedictorian of her class, she earned a master of arts degree from Columbia University, specializing in the education of the deaf and hard of hearing. Following her graduation, she taught deaf and hard of hearing children for a number of years in the Albany Public Schools. She and her husband, who was the president of the First Trust Company of Albany, lived in Albany until 1971 and then again from 1982 until 1994. She was active in community affairs, fund raising and charitable activities, serving as a trustee of the College of Saint Rose and as the president of its Alumnae Fund. In 2005, the college awarded her its Carondolet Lifetime Achievement Award. She served as a trustee of St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center of New York, Westchester Branch, Harrison and was president of its auxiliary. Mrs. Sandman was treasurer of the Rye Council Ladies of Charity and was a founding member of the Ladies of Charity Association of the Albany Diocese. She was president of the Trinity College Parents Association and she and her husband were the first co-chairs of the Parents Association of Boston College. She was also a volunteer at the Brady Maternity and St. Peter's Hospitals in Albany and United Hospital in Port Chester, N.Y. She is survived by her devoted husband, Edgar A. Sandman; her children, Paul W. Sandman and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Sandman of Wellesley Hills, Mass.; Nancy M. Sandman of Wellesley, Mass.; James J. Sandman and his wife, Elizabeth D. Mullin, of Washington D.C.; Jean S. Manthorne and her husband, A. William Manthorne of Windham, N.H.; and John M. Sandman and his wife, Barbara E. Jones, of Delhi, N.Y. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Katherine S. McKinley of Newtonville, Mass.; Margaret M. Ingimundarson of Boston, Mass.; William A. Sandman of Washington, D.C.; Alison S. Rush of Brighton, Mass.; Christopher J. Rush of Wellesley, Mass.; Joseph M. Sandman and Elizabeth D. Sandman of Washington, D.C.; Debra M. Giddings of Windham, N.H.; William L. Manthorne of Newburyport, Mass.; Benjamin C. Sandman of Delhi, N.Y. and three great -grandchildren, Jack S. McKinley, Mary L. Ingimundarson, and Christopher S. Giddings. She was the sister of the late Mary Dugan Conley, Mabel Dugan Connors and D. Joseph Dugan.
