Mary Devane Obituary

Devane, Mary
LOUDONVILLE - Mary Patricia (Whalen) Devane passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 12, 2025, surrounded by her children, after a brief illness. Born in Albany, N.Y., to Mary Broderick Whalen and Thomas M. Whalen Jr., Mary Pat spent childhood summers in Dalton, Mass., with her grandparents and later, on Taconic Lake, Petersburg, N.Y., with her family. After graduating from the Academy of the Holy Names in Albany, N.Y., Mary Pat received her Bachelor's Degree in Economics from the College of New Rochelle. During both high school and college, Mary Pat excelled on the basketball court and was a valued team player. Following completion of her education, she was employed by General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. On September 4, 1954, Mary Pat married Thomas A. Devane Jr., and they spent 62 cherished years building and supporting their family until Tom's passing in 2016. With a life devoted to her faith, her family and dedicated service to others, Mary Pat was an elementary school teacher, member of the Catholic Women's Service League and the Holy Cross Parish Ladies Auxiliary. After raising their family in Albany, N.Y., Mary Pat and Tom moved to Loudonville, N.Y., and became active parishioners at St. Pius X Church. Mary Pat was the beloved mother of Thomas A. Devane III, Patricia Smith (Tom), Maureen Kipper (Carl), Daniel Devane (Sharon), Brian Devane (Beth), Kathleen Fouracre (Douglas) and the late Mary Ann Allen. Mary Pat is the mother-in-law of John Allen. She also leaves behind 19 deeply loved grandchildren, Candice Rose (Ronnie), Jennifer Murdza, Christopher Smith (Darcy Kohn), Matthew Allen, Andrew Smith (Dr. Katie Seither), Sarah Allen, Katherine Nersesian (Mark), Emily Smith, Karolyn Clement (Andrew), Elizabeth Devane (Marc Vrigian), Laura Kipper (Nicholas Cocilova), Molly Allen Bowlby (Patrick), Brian Devane, John Fouracre (Darby LaFlamme), Meghan Devane, Grace Devane, Erin Fouracre, William Devane and Mary Devane; and nine deeply loved great-grandchildren, Kailey and Paige Rose, Reid Smith, Milo Smith, Mark and Maeve Nersesian, Cona, Ruth and Alma Clement and Liam Cocilova. She is survived by her siblings, Carolyn Gaynor and Dr. Michael B. Whalen (Joanne); and sister-in-law, Denie Whalen; and many treasured nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, honorable Thomas M. Whalen III; and brother-in-law, John M. Gaynor. As per her wishes, funeral services will be private at the family's convenience. In a word, that description of Mary Pat´s life? FAMILY. There was so much LOVE in that beautiful woman, and so MUCH love surrounded her! She was a walking smile, and she and her family brightened the lives of my parents and our similarly huge clan. I am so happy to have known her, and to know she is at peace after a long and joy-filled life. My deepest condolences to her family and all who knew and loved her. There were so many!
