Matthew Daskalakis Obituary

Daskalakis, Matthew Sr. ALBANY Matthew "Babe" Daskalakis Sr., 86, passed away peacefully in his home Thursday, October 26, 2017, in the arms of Odette, his loving wife of 39 years. A native of Brooklyn, Matthew turned his passion for baseball into his first career. After high school, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox Organization as a first baseman, and his talents took him up and down the east coast, where he played for a number of teams including the Albany Senators. During this time, he was drafted by the U.S.M.C., and he proudly served his country during the Korean War. Following his baseball years, Matthew embraced a second career at N.Y.S. O.M.R.D.D. He retired after 25 years of helping youths succeed later in life. Matthew then embarked on his third and final career, purchasing the Boulevard Cafeteria (which later became the Ristorante Paradiso). Matthew was known for his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, and he left a lasting impression on everyone who was fortunate enough to have met him. His family will forever cherish their memories of him and his remarkable life. Matthew was predeceased by parents, George and Martha; and siblings, Nicholas, Jack, Paul, and Mary. He is survived by his beloved wife; children, Matt Jr., Lisa, Adam, Alexander, and Nicholas; grandchildren, Nicole, Matty, Lydia, Lyanna, and Vivian; his brothers, George and James; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Alderisio and the staff of Albany Medical Center's Cardiology Department for their outstanding care and compassion. In accordance with Matthew and his family's wishes, there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in Matthew's memory to AMCH Cardiology Department. My condolences for the family. My father was Joe (Isabella) Bell Sr. the Albany Sentors Trainer. As kids we would be at Hawkins Stadium to watch the games & Babe was one of our favorites. He was a such a nice guy.

Isabella was our legal last name but in baseball everyone knew my father as Bell.
