Matthew Graves Obituary

Graves, Matthew F. ALBANY Matthew F. Graves, 70, a much-loved husband, father, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's in Albany. Born in Troy on February 26, 1947, Matt was raised and educated in Averill Park and was the son of the late Floyd and Grace (Considine) Graves. He was a graduate of Averill Park High School, where he excelled in both baseball and basketball. During that same time, Matt also helped with his family's business, the Lakeview Hotel. Following high school, he went on to attend and graduate from Ohio State University, where as a walk on, he played collegiate baseball. He remained a loyal alumnus, always anticipating their games versus their rivals each year. A well-known area sports columnist and handicapper, Matt had covered horse racing for 43 years, and began his career during Secretariat's juvenile season in 1972. He was a public handicapper for more than 40 years and was a member of the staff of both the Troy Record and Times Union, until 2012. A four-time overall handicapping champion at Saratoga, Matt was also a two-time winner of the Red Smith Award, for coverage of the Kentucky Derby and a former Associated Press national top 10 columnist. He was the leading handicapper for the Times Union, the final six years of his career, before retiring. Following his retirement, Matt continued on as a free-lance writer covering RPI Hockey, writing featured articles for the Times Union during the racing season at Saratoga, covering the Preakness yearly, and as a handicapper for Capital OTB. During his last years of work, despite battling a serious illness, Matt continued on with his usual dedication and a smile, so that most people were unaware of his illness. Matt's family would like to express a special and heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of St. Peter's Hospital and the Hospice Inn, for the dedicated and loving care given to Matt during his stay. We will forever be grateful. He is survived by his loving wife, the former Debra Beauchea Hallman; daughter, Jennifer Graves (David Quigg); grandsons, Westerly and Nathaniel; granddaughter, Macy; stepson, Ryon Hallman and his wife, Valerie; brothers, John and Timothy Graves; sister, Patricia Jones; sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Bill Curley; nephews, John Graves Jr., Michael Graves, Paul Graves, Ryne and Alec Jones; loved nieces, Kirsten McGarry and Lauren Graves; and mother-in-law, Mary Lou Beauchea. Matt also leaves behind treasured great-nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws and dear friends. Anyone who knew Matt knows he was quick with a story, a laugh, a Roy Orbison song if "asked" and a tip for the next race. Matt was a character for sure, but possessed more character than most could hope for. He was a simple man with regard to material things, whose only real desire was to be remembered, and remember him we will, always. A funeral Mass for Matt will be celebrated on Friday, February 2, at 11 a.m. in St. Henry's Church, Averill Park, where the Reverend Thomas Holmes, pastor, will officiate. His interment will be private. Friends are invited to attend his funeral Mass and may also visit with Matt's family on Thursday, from 4 until 8 p.m., at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway in Watervliet. Please visit parkerbrosmemorial.com to leave a message of sympathy, to light a candle and for driving directions.

To The Graves Family: My condolences on Matt's passing. I knew him - and liked him - for many, many years. We competed against each other at Saratoga for nearly three decades. He was very good at what he did, but more importantly, was a very good guy. I'm sorry I missed the services but I've been thinking about him ever since I found out. Rest in peace Matt and may you win every photo finish in heaven.

Every opening day I would be waiting for Matt to come To my seats and say hello. I knew then the track was open.We would bust each other and proclaim who's the better handicapper. We would laugh all day each time we lost. A great time all the time. When the track closed I would see him at various establishments and continue our debates looking forward for next years opening. To put Matt in a category is pretty simple for me. One of the nicest persons I have ever met. When opening day rolls around this year his seat will be where it has been every year. He will be in my heart forever and he will be at the track arguing with me every day. I'll miss you terrible Matt. My prayers to the entire family

Dear Debbie and Family-
I don't have the words. I am truly saddened by the loss of Matt. I was glad I had the chance to talk to him on the phone, not once but twice, in the last couple of weeks.
After four decades of being friends, I am blessed with so many great memories. Matt would join our party in Siro's parking lot in Saratoga after the races. I always made sure to have a couple of Miller Lights on ice for him after a long and hot summer day of handicapping. He always had the best stories and his quirky sense of humor kept us all laughing. Then who can forget Sunday afternoons spent with Matt and his brother, John, at O'Toole's before heading to Jessica Stones to meet the guys. One thing I remember most about those Sundays is Matt never went home to you without bringing you dinner from Joe's or Spiak's or other places he knew you would like.
I have to say, he sure put up a hell of a fight. If Matt Graves' life was a horse race, he would definitely be the favorite! His spirit enriched everyone he met and he will be greatly missed by each and every one of them.
Just know I am thinking of you and all of Matt's family during this sad time and you are all in my prayers. Love, Squeak (and Karen)

I was amazed at the courage he had with his health issues.
He never complained, wanted to stay busy and active and greatly enjoy life.
I treasure the emails he used to send asking about how else HE could improve his medical status.
He had a great style and wit you will never forget.
Rest in peace, Matt.

From those days and nights 45 years ago when Matt worked the backstretch and the press box of SaraToga Race Course with the joy of an old timer, and out hit our jockeys at the Rec Field on Union Avenue, Matt has always been the one guy you'd want to know and make friends with. One Press vs Jockeys softball game, the Jocks had us by double digits when it was Matt's turn at bat. As The Athlete in our bunch, he naturally took the first pitch and sent it over the fence to our hearty cheers and four added runs -- he did it again next time up and by the final inning we had won. Thanks to Matt, "The Star!"
Mary Ellen and I will miss seeing him laugh-jousting with old friends at Longfellows.
