Matthew Morgan Obituary

Morgan, Matthew
HOMER - Matthew A. Morgan passed away peacefully on February 2, 2023, surrounded by his loving family after an eight-year battle with cancer.
He was born on July 10, 1948, in Cortland, N.Y. and loved living in this community his entire life. Matt's life was devoted to his family, friends and the many communities he served. He enjoyed a fulfilling and successful career running Morgan Associates for 20 years, his own lobbying firm based in Albany. He went on to serve as deputy director of the N.Y.S. Fair, deputy commissioner of the N.Y.S. Department of Agriculture and Markets, and Regional Administrator of the N.Y.S. Workers' Compensation Board.
Matt was committed to the people of this state, serving as a member of the Democratic State Committee for 20 years, the Board of Directors for Morrisville College Council for 30 years, the Foundation Board at Morrisville State College for 29 years, and the Elmcrest Children's Center for 25 years. He was the president of the Association of Council Members and Trustees and served on the Chancellor's Advisory Council, Foundation Board at TCCC, numerous boards and counsels at Cornell University, and as a trustee at the Brewster House.
Many people knew him as "Captain Matt" from Captain Matt's restaurant at the N.Y.S. Fair, where he felt blessed with his partner and his wife, Gary and Vi Bobbett, whose family was like family to his own throughout the years.
Matt smiled freely, loved often and had a contagious laugh that could lift the spirits of those even in the direst of situations. He loved his life, career, friends and most importantly his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth (McMahon) Morgan and William H. Morgan II; sister, Margaret (Morgan) Perfetti, and brother-in-law, David Perfetti; brother, Michael Morgan and sister-in-law, Susie Morgan; father and mother-in-law, Hap and Fanny Griswold; and sister-in-law, Sharon Fedele. Matthew is survived by Linda, his loving wife of 49 years; his four children, Marc (Gail), Stephen (Jennifer), Meghan, and Kevin (Lianna) Morgan; his grandchildren, Kaylee, Joseph, Connor, Madison, Maeve, Daniel, Jack, Emmaline, Sophia, Meara, Asher, Paxton, Dominick, and Matthew Morgan and Mya Goddard, as well as Zachary, Joshua and William Morgan; his sister, Maureen Morgan; his cousin/brother/best friend, Steve (Doreen) Morgan; and his sisters-in-law, Janet Klein and Judy (Dana) Norman. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and a number of loving relatives and friends.
Matt also considered all his children's and grandchildren's friends as part of our family. He made a lasting impact on more people than we could possibly list. He loved them all as his own.
Matt and his family want to give a special thank you to his many loving nieces and nephews that have helped us get through the last few months. An extra special thank you goes out to Matt's loving granddaughters, Kaylee Morgan and Mya Goddard, and his niece and nephew, Tim and Lisa Perfetti, for their endless, constant care of Matt (and his family) in his final months. Their love, guidance, selflessness and care for Matt is something we will all be eternally grateful for.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, in St. Margaret's Catholic Church, 14 Copeland Ave., in Homer, N.Y. Calling hours will be held at the church on Wednesday from 4 - 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at giftfunds.stjude.org or a charity of your choice.

Sadly my father, Richard J Siracuse passed away on August 30,2023 - how fitting, during the fair.

I am sure Captain Matt was waiting for his arrival to talk over the great times they had at the Great New York State Fair.

Matt always brought joy and sunshine to a world that can so often be dark and full of sadness. Thirty seconds after you met Matt, he was your friend for life. He was one of the snappiest dresser in Albany, but yet always the humble, country boy, a friend to all. And when the chips were down, you could always count on Matt to have your back. He was a truly compassionate Christian and probably has Jesus laughing right now with a good joke or story. God bless Matt Morgan and his wonderful family.

I cannot think of anyone who did more to help the office I managed than Matt Morgan. This fine gentleman really cared about the work we did, and genuinely liked people... and it showed. Often people fear or resent the higher ups coming, but his visits were a pleasure. He always inquired how he could help, and then made every effort to do so. A dedicated public servant in the finest meaning of the word. We are all better for having known Matt.
