Michael Bette Obituary

Bette, Michael F. LOUDONVILLE Michael F. Bette, 76, died Thursday, April 11, 2013. Born in the Bronx and raised on Long Island, he was the son of the late Alexander and Rosemary Reidy Bette. He attended Chaminade High School and Manhattan College. In 1973, Mr. Bette and his partner, Bob Barry, established the construction firm, Barry & Bette, Inc. After 10 successful years, he helped form Barry, Bette and Led Duke, Inc (BBL). In 1999, Mr. Bette became chairman of the Bette Companies and along with his sons formed Bette & Cring Construction Group, First Columbia, BBL Florida and BBLTexas, ensuring the continuation of the family's construction and real estate development businesses. Mr. Bette's many local projects include major work at the Empire State Plaza, Siena, SUNY Albany, Albany College of Pharmacy, Albany Medical Center, St. Peter's Hospital and Ellis Hospital. Michael Bette was elected to the board of trustees at both Manhattan College and Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and was presented a degree of doctor of humane letters from both institutions. In addition to work, Mr. Bette understood the value of spending time with his family. He coached youth sports and was a Scoutmaster at Troop 48 in Clifton Park. He loved Lake George and spending time with family and friends at his home on Cleverdale. Known as "Opa" to his grandchildren, Michael was equally proud of each and will be missed by them all. An avid golfer for most of his life, he learned the game as a caddy at Bethpage and was a member at Schuyler Meadows, Glens Falls Country Club and the Everglades Club. Mr. Bette will be known not only as an entrepreneur, but for his generous philanthropy. He supported many area organizations and was particularly interested in supporting organizations that provided services to area youth and those less fortunate. Bette served as past board member of Hope House, the Twin Rivers Council, Boy Scouts of America, Albany College of Pharmacy and his alma mater, Manhattan College. He was the dear husband of Mary Ann Harding Bette; beloved father of Matthew Bette (Lisa), Kevin Bette (Kathleen), Peter Bette (Patricia), Ann Marie Parker (William), Christopher Bette (Anne), Mark Bette (Gina) and Suzanne Bette; cherished grandfather of Patrick, Catherine, Brendan and Brian, Nathaniel, Michael, Madeline and Cecelia, Nicholas, Rebekah, Mary Elizabeth and William, Alexander and Julia, Emily and Sarah; brother of Ellen Andrews. Dear Matt and Kevin,
I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about your Dad's death. I used to play golf on Saturday mornings at the GF country club. Your dad would join us often. I was and continue to be a terrible golfer, but he was always very kind and patient and a delight to be with. My wife and I are very sorry for your loss.

Sincerely,

Charlie Barnes

I first met Mike standing in line awaiting the inauguration of a Union College president some years ago where he was proudly representing his alma mater (Manhattan College) and I,mine (Dickinson College)our place in line established by the date of our institutions' founding. We had a witty exchange and I was struck by his social grace and his varied interests and particularly in his pride in his family which was evident throughout our conversation.

My deepest sympathy to the Bette family. Mike's many contributions and rich legacy in this area and elsewhere will not be forgotten.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach have been told. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.

May your loving memories keep him alive in your heart and in your lives forever.

To the Bette family,

Michael Bette was one of the most honorable people that I have met in my career. He was firm but fair in his management of his companies and always gave you the assistance when asked. He was kind and generous and at the same time never asked for recognition. He was rock solid in his business affairs and was respected by clients, subcontractors, employees and friends.

Although a man of few words, the ones that were spoken meant something. He was not a "waster" of time and got the most out of his associates by setting a high bar for work ethic and integrity.

Although I wasn't a close friend he always treated me with respect and during my tenure at BBL I learned very quickly that he was a huge part of the success of that firm.

Mike will be sorely missed by all and Heaven now has the solid soul that we were privileged to know here while his time was with us.

God speed, Mike Bette, and thank you for making our World a better place.
