Michael Melkonian Obituary

Melkonian, Hon. Michael H. WEST SAND LAKE Hon. Michael H. Melkonian, 55 of West Sand Lake, died suddenly Thursday, October 17, 2019, at Albany Medical Center. Born in Brooklyn, he was son of Alice (Mergerian) Melkonian, Garden City and the late Cedric Melkonian. Michael lived in Garden City before moving to Albany in 1997 and has resided in West Sand Lake since 2002. He was a 1986 graduate of Marist College where he earned his bachelor of arts in communication and earned his juris doctorate from St. John's University School of Law in 1990. Michael began his career in 1992 in private practice at the Law office of Michael H. Melkonian, Esq. From 1994- 95 he served as Counsel to New State Senator Serphin R. Maltese, 15th Senatorial District and from 1995-97 he was an Assistant Attorney General in the Litigation Bureau for the N.Y.S. Department of Law. From 1997- 99 he was an Assistant Counsel for the N.Y.S. Office of Mental Health and from 1999-2007 he was an Assistant Counsel to the Majority for the New York State Senate. In 2007, he was appointed Commissioner of the Legislative Bill Drafting Commission until his judicial career began. In 2008 he was appointed by Gov. David Patterson as a Court of Claims, Acting Supreme Court Justice. From 2008-2010 served on the New York State Supreme Court Criminal Term, First Judicial District and currently served on the New York State Supreme Court, Third Judicial District. He also served as a Judge Advocate with the U.S. Army Reserve from 1999 to 2006 and then served in the Army National Guard of New York in 2006 and 2007. Michael is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Caroline (Beal) Melkonian; his daughter, Olivia; and his son, Maxwell; his mother, Alice; brother, Kenneth (Lucinda) Melkonian; and sister, Karin (Russell Fincher) Melkonian, all of Garden City, Long Island; mother-in-law, Colette Beal; and sister-in-law Kimberly Beal, both of New Port Richey, Fla.; father-in-law, F. Gilbert Beal of Virginia Beach, Va.; Rebecca Beal (Virgil Figuerado) of Crystal Beach, Fla.; and Douglas Beal (Rachel Azima) of Lincoln, Neb. In addition, Michael is survived by several nieces and nephews, Amanda, Rebecca, James, and Thomas Melkonian, and Cameron Beal; as well as many other children who looked to him as a dad. Michael will be remembered as a caring, considerate, and compassionate friend, a father figure to many, and a protector of all. He was immensely proud of his two children whom he adored. Michael was the life of the party and entertained us all with his zany antics, critical commentary, and outlandish stories. His steady hand and patient temperament drew scores of individuals to seek his counsel. Michael enjoyed reading about and collecting antique furniture and clocks, creating elaborate model railroad structures, listening to classical music, target sporting, and spending time with his family. He was an assistant coach for his son's travel baseball team, teaching young men to persevere, encouraging them to overcome defeat, and celebrating their successes. Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc., 276 Pawling Avenue, Troy on Tuesday, from 4 - 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, State and Third Streets, Troy, Rev. I met Mike when I joined the staff of Senator Maltese's office in Howard Beach. He was kind, helpful and very knowledgeable. Bruce and I were so thrilled to be at his beautiful wedding to Caroline. We were so proud when Mike joined the judiciary. Prayers to his beautiful family.

I knew Mike as that big, friendly guy at the YMCA. Over the past year especially we would chat when we were there. He was bright, funny, and always more than willing with a story. We shared stories about our families, with kids pretty close in age, and he spoke fondly of his family often. I was stunned and saddened to hear the news. My sincere condolences to family and loved ones.

I knew him for many years; as I helped recruit him for the Army Jag and frequently saw him at the New York State Capitol Building. I last saw him at a neighbor's party several years ago. He always called me Colonel although he was a judge. A wonderful person and a brilliant lawyer.

Dearest Caroline, Olivia and Michael. I am so sorry to hear that Mike is gone. If I'm shocked, I can only imagine your state of mind these days. I lost my father too at a very young age. He was only 33 when he did of a heart attack, I was 9. While I do have an idea of how such a sudden loss can feel like, I also know that it is so hard right now and nothing that anyone can say can help what you're truly feeling right now. And I'm so sorry that you all are going through this. I have nothing but fantastic memories of Mike. Such a great sense of humor, making fun of himself most of the time. His love of antiques, his love of living large really. Great laugh, great smile, great guy. He really will be missed and I really can't believe this happened. Caroline - my heart has been with you - I know we haven't been in touch lately but you are in my thoughts these days. Sending you virtual hugs and strength. Jennie and Louis Bono

Caroline and Family,
Mike was a wonderful man. I am so happy to have known him as the town's Republican Chairman. It was my honor to have him swear me and others in on New Years Day. I often told him. You were the best Republican Chairman that the town of Sand Lake ever had. He was a friend to all. He loved you and the kids so much. My thoughts and prayers go out to you during this difficult time.

Caroline-I am so sorry for your family's loss. He had a great sense of humor and his love of you and the kids was so evident. It is so hard to lose a person, but harder to lose them so suddenly.

May you all be able to find peace and comfort in the love of the family and friends around you.

Great Judge. More importantly, he was a great guy. As an attorney, I appeared in front of Judge Melkonian often. He was always fair and practical. After we got to know each other over the years we began to talk about our kids and our family. It was clear to me how much he he loved his children and his wife as spoke about them often. I will miss him as a great judge and my sincere condolences to his family. He loved you very much.
