Milton Kaplan Obituary

Kaplan, Milton M. DELMAR Our dad, Milton M. Kaplan, passed away on April 1, 2013 at age 93. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Sylvia, with whom he had a love affair for 51 years; his baby brother and best friend, Lawrence Kaplan, who passed away a year ago; and their sister Adele Jacobson, who shared his love of volunteering and defending the underdog. He is also predeceased by his parents, Abraham and Miriam Kaplan. Milton is survived by his children, daughter, Lee Kaplan; and son, Sam Kaplan (Penny Kaplan); and grandchildren Eric and Kate Kaplan. Dad was a voracious reader, mainly non-fiction, particularly the Civil War. He also loved a good detective series to cleanse the palate. As a psychiatric social worker and tireless volunteer, Milton devoted his professional life and retirement years to the developmentally disabled. He served for decades on the board of directors at New Visions and NYSARC. A man ahead of his time, he was advocating group homes and prevention back in the 1950s. Dad's quest to learn never ceased. He and mom traveled to many Elderhostels. After her passing in 2000, he continued locally with HILL and Oasis courses, often suggesting course topics and persuading local leaders to lecture. Milton was known to always ask provocative questions, no matter the venue. Dad was a lifelong member of Consumers Union, and kept every issue of Consumer Reports dating back to 1932. Dad's love for and knowledge of cars was well known. I know he and mom are taking road trips together in his favorite cars, his father's 1930 Jordan, and his 1949 Dodge. Services at the Beth Emeth Cemetery, Turner Lane in Loudonville, N.Y. on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 11 a.m. For directions or to sign the online guestbook, please visit our website, levinememorialchapel

I loved his Elmer Fudd hats he would wear...always helpful, kind and loving. Mr. Kaplin loved his children Sam and Lee and missed his wife every day since her passing. He carried photographs of all in his wallet. He always returned a smile and was a good hugger. I will miss sharing a cup of Cold Stone hot coco with my very favorite sweet kind man. I will miss our long talks, I will miss seeing his cute Kaplin shuffle and I will never forget him. The world was a better place having him in it AND I was blessed to have known him.

To the family of Milton Kaplan,
My deepest sympathy for the loss of such a wonderful and unique individual. I did not have the privelage of knowing him long but he did make an impression - I was the receptionist at New Visions and he was such a pleasure to talk with - I would look forward to Board meetings just to have the pleasure of talking with him. I am so honored to have known him he was a wonderful person who will be deeply missed.

My deepest condolences to Milton's family on the loss of your father. I knew Milton from our days at what is now known as the Office of Mental Health. More recently, I have had the pleasure of his company at the monthly lunches at the Beverwyck. He was a caring, kind and lovely man. He will be missed.
