Nellie Eaton Obituary

Eaton, Nellie M. TROY Nellie Marie Van DeMark Eaton, 97, died Sunday, October 28, 2007 at Van Rensselaer Manor, after a short illness. Born in Woodstock, N.Y., and raised in Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter the late John J. and Nellie Bonesteel Van DeMark, step-daughter of the late Lena Gerbert Van-DeMark, and the beloved wife of the late Kenneth Eaton, who died December 14, 2000. They were married for 47 years. A former Gypsy Lane, Brunswick resident for most of her life, she moved to Van Rensselaer Manor in March 2004. Mrs. Eaton worked as a seamstress for the former Cluett-Peabody & Co. in Troy for more than 30 years. She retired in 1972. She was a former member of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union and the Improved Order of Red Men, Degree of Pocahontas. In her younger years, Nellie was an avid bowler with the Hill Top bowling league and competed in tournaments throughout the Capital Region. She and her late husband, Ken were very avid square dancers for many years. She was an original member of our Lady of Victory craft club; and was also noted for her crafts and pies at local flea markets. Survivors include a nephew, Bruce R. Eaton of Brunswick; two nieces, Janice E. Burns of Wilton and Lydia E. Plante of Troy; several other nieces and nephews in Poughkeepsie; her sister-in-law, June VanDeMark of Raleigh, N.C.; and several other in-laws, great-nieces and great-nephews. Nellie was predeceased by her four brothers and three sisters. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Van Rensselaer Manor for their compassion and care of Nellie for the past three years. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday from the McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home, 109th St. and Third Avenue, Lansingburgh, with Rev. E. Allen Siebold officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Memorial donations to the Resident Activities Fund at Van Rensselaer Manor, 85 Bloomingrove Drive, Troy, NY 12180 would be appreciated. For guest book, visit www.mcloughlinmason.com

Lydia,

Nellie was a very special person. I do not know if you remember me or not but I worked at Leonard Hospital with your mother-in-law, Barbara Plante, I met you several times but it was a long time ago. Nellie was a wonderful person, I remember going to her house, swimming in the pool, et cetera. Having cookouts. She was godmother to one of my dearest friends, Patty Sgarlata, whose mom passed away last week. Nellie made me a quilt 25+ years ago that I still have on my bed. I extend my sympathy to you, Lydia, and your family.

Sincerely, Dona M. Rossetti

It was pleasure helping Nellie at her home before she moved to the manor. I have fond memories of all our outings and her stories.
