Nicholas Huban

1951 - 2020

Huban, Nicholas LATHAM Nicholas Huban entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 22, 2020, at the age of 69. Born in Troy on March 21, 1951, Nicholas was the son of the late Theodore and Mary (Thomas) Huban. Known to everyone as "Nick," he was raised in Latham and was a member of the graduating class of 1969 of Shaker High School. He later attended Dean College in Franklin, Mass. Nick began a lifelong career in the restaurant and hospitality industry in the early 1970's when he first worked for his uncle, the late Steve Thomas, at the Silver Spur Restaurant in Latham. In 1974, with disco gaining in popularity, Nick opened Sneaky Pete's on the Latham Circle. It quickly became a well known and premier area discotheque and night club which remained open until 1984. In 1986, Nick opened "On the Farm," a seasonal fast food and ice cream restaurant in Latham on land which, for generations, was his family's farm. The restaurant is known for providing items made from family recipes and of fresh and locally grown ingredients. In that same year, Nick began to offer Christmas trees for sale from the property surrounding the restaurant, which, to this day, continues to provide area residents with fresh and beautiful trees for the holiday. In 1994, Nick reopened Sneaky Pete's in Saratoga Springs and the night club flourished there until 2000 when Nick relocated the establishment to Central Avenue in Albany. In 2007, with a desire to spend more time at home and with his children and, eventually, his grandchildren, Nick closed Sneaky Pete's bringing an end to a long and celebrated era. Over the years, Nick was also involved in the operation and management of the BluStone Bistro on Wolf Road; Nosh Delicatessen on Western Avenue; the Crossroads in West Sand Lake and Carmella's on Central Avenue in Albany. He currently was also operating the Ice Cream Shop in Schenectady. Nick enjoyed and appreciated the times spent with his family. He also enjoyed downhill skiing and running in marathons. He participated in and completed the Boilermaker 15K Road Race in Utica numerous times. A farmer at heart, Nick enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers. Nick's memory will be cherished by many. He leaves behind his children, Alexandra Huban, Theodore (Nicole) Huban, Nicholas (Jamie) Huban and his step-daughter, Kyle Durni; his grandchildren, Logan Patrick and Charlotte Huban; his sister, Cathy Huban; his cherished partner in life, Judith Durni; and his former wife and lifelong friend, Mary Huban; as well as many cousins and life-long friends, many of whom Nick considered family. In addition to his parents, Nick was preceded in death by his stepson, Gavin Durni. Friends are invited to visit with Nick's family on Friday, November 27, 2020, from 3 until 8 p.m. at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway in Watervliet. A Trisagion memorial service will be held in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and the Reverend Emmanuel Mantzouris, pastor of St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church in Troy, will officiate. Please note that the number of people in the facility will be limited at any given time, facial masks must be worn and social distancing will be required. A private funeral service, limited to the immediate family, will be held on Saturday and the committal service and interment will follow in Elmwood Hill Cemetery, Troy.
