Norbert Stegemann Obituary

Stegemann, Norbert L. DELMAR Norbert Lee Stegemann, 59, of Devon Rd., Delmar, died peacefully late Wednesday evening, June 9, 2010 at his home after a brief struggle with liver cancer. Norbert was surrounded by the artwork he loved, the Labradors he cherished and in the company of his longtime partner, Christopher Cooper and good friend, Linda Sweener. Born January 10, 1951 in Queens, N.Y., he was the son of the late Joseph J. and Elfriede Pinapfel Stegemann. Being raised in Floral Park until 1960, his family relocated to East Northport, N.Y. and he graduated from Commack High School in 1969. Norbert attended SUNY at Farmingdale and graduated in 1971 with an associate's degree in applied science (mortuary science). He served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1972 and remained in the US Army Reserves until 1975. Norbert's career in funeral service started when he purchased the former Hack Funeral Home in Schaghticoke in 1972, renaming it Stegemann & Hack Funeral Home. After residing in Valley Falls for many years, Norbert purchased the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home in Stephentown and the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home of Petersburgh in 1982. He later purchased the former Robson-Decker Funeral Home in Hoosick Falls, renaming it Robson-Stegemann Funeral Home. In 1994, he sold the three funeral homes and resided in Slingerlands and Delmar, N.Y. Even though he had retired, Norbert kept his funeral license current and was still very active in helping the many families he had serviced prior who had become his friends. In 1996, Mr. Stegemann purchased the Surfside Inn, a 100-room hotel on Cape Cod Bay in Provincetown, Mass. The hotel was sold in 2000. He enjoyed raising Seeing Eye dogs and Labrador Retrievers. A former communicant of Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls, Sacred Heart Church in Berlin and St. Joseph's Church in Stephen-town, Norbert served as parish council president in all three churches. He served on many cemetery boards along with memberships in the Hoosick Falls Kiwanis and the Unity Masonic Lodge #9 F&AM in New Lebanon. Survivors include his longtime companion, Christopher Cooper and five Labrador Retrievers with whom he resided; his brothers with associated family members, Ralph, Peter and Keith (predeceased by Dennis L.). A special person to Norbert was his nephew, Alexander K. Stegemann. Norbert was an eclectic man with interests reaching far and wide, this is totally reflected in the diverse people he was blessed to call friends. His desire to learn, not always listen, was the drive for him to visit many overseas destinations, Australia, Africa, Egypt, Kenya, many European countries including Austria his mother's birthplace, Russia, Asia, Bangkok, Hong Kong and extensive travels in the USA. The decision to keep Norbert at home and not go to a facility was simple. The ability to do so was entirely different. I have to take the time to thank the many friends and associates that made it possible for Norbert to live his final journey at home in Delmar. Linda Sweener, the final group of PCA Aides that touched him so deeply especially Joe "the night guy" and Matt. Dr. Ralph Liporace whose home visits at the right moments helped in ways medicine will never understand. Nurse Kathy Purcell, amazing set of ears. NYOH: Dr. Shaffer and Dr. Siskin and their adorably nice staff for the amazing surgery that gave us the gift of extra time. Four Corners Pharmacy: Paul, John and staff for extending yourselves when I felt most challenged and alone. Delmar Senior Services for making equipment so simple. Albany VNA for nursing services. Thank you all for helping: Christopher Cooper. A Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be con-celebrated on Monday, June 14 at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Route 43 and Grange Hall Road, Stephentown. Relatives and friends are invited to visitation on Sunday, June 13 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY 43, Stephentown. Norbert requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Guiding Eye for the Blind or the Norbert Lee Stegemann Scholarship at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in care of the funeral home, PO Box 9, Stephentown, NY 12168.

Time is quiet, like sand it slides past us while we are distracted by our busy lives and then suddenly you find that everything around you has changed, yet you would swear it feels like time has slowed or not changed at all. Time can be sneaky like that we purely exist in it when it is in abundance and later curse when we did not use it wisely. I had many great times with Norbert and truly wish he was here on the Gold Coast, Australia enjoying those things he wished to see in retirement. I think of you resting with our dogs in that tranquil Upstate park, but it feels hollow to me, empty because there is no sound of the joy we had on that land. The wind, water and falling leaves whisper things to ease their minds but you do not have to listen to them. The thought of never seeing you or our home again was a terrible prospect that I was forced to accept and now after 10 years, I can say that it was indeed the cruelest punishment ever handed to me.
Ah yes time. Time doesnt make it get better; it just makes it different.

I never imagined my heart could ache as much as it does today. I feel blessed for the smallest things and still look up when the doorbell rings or there is a knock at the door; how I wish it was you coming home again. I love you Bubala. Christopher, Kabuki and Ayla

Norbert was a great and loving grandfather to our son Kaleb. They shared a great bond, and Kaleb loved his "Poppie" and Poppie's dogs. Norbert would just glow whenever he knew that Kaleb was coming over, and always offered to babysit on many occasions. We are glad that Kaleb and Poppie were able to make some great memories together. He will be sadly missed!!!!

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Dear Chris,Ellen and Norbet's family I do not know the words that can express how sad I felt on hearing about the loss of Norbet. Like so many others Norbet entered our lives at a
devasting time on the sudden loss of our Dad Donald Duffy,
My brothers Jim, Don and I called Hall & Higgins seeking help. My father had died in Long Island and we had to get him home. Norbet said not to worry he would take care of it all and he did and from that moment on Norbet became part of our family... and once again he was there during the untimely shocking death of my brother Don....once again helping us bring him home to Lebanon.
Then in later years he was just a great loving friend. I will miss your emails Norbet but you will always stay in the Duffy hearts. God speed and bring you home to Him.
I will keep you in our prayers Chris during this very sad time....thank you for taking such good care of Norbet.

It was a great moment in 1989 when I met Norbert - We became friends and he took me to a play. We laughed and enjoyed each others company for awhile then life sent us on other journeys. Dear Chris, Linda and Family of Norbert,
I have known this wonderful man for over 20 years. The only thing I regret is not being able to comfort him in the final days as he has comforted so many.
I first met Norbert while working for The Bennington Banner and doing advertising for him to having him help my former husband and myself in the wee morning hours when my father-in-law passed to the great Halloween parties he had in Stephentown and living over the Hoosick Falls funeral home.
There are not enough words to express how wonderful this man was.I can only pray that he is finally at peace and we will meet again in the next life.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficlt time. Many years have passed but he will always have a special place in my heart!
Love,

I was surprised to hear of Norbert's
passing. Too soon at just 59. He had
hired me for various odd jobs during
2005-2008. I first met Norbert at a
bowling league some years back; we
were on the same team. ...Wherever
his ma is, who had predeceased him
only late last year, Norbert is with
her again...
