Paul Canfield Obituary

Canfield, Paul
TROY - Paul R. Canfield, 74, passed away unexpectedly April 25, 2024, at Samaritan Hospital, where he had previously been employed as an X-ray technician for 45 years.
Paul will be remembered for his kindness to others, his strong work ethic and his devotion to his family. He also leaves behind a legacy of strength and determination, and a great sense of humor. During his lifetime, he possessed the ability to know what the right thing to do was and a strong moral compass to follow through on it. If he cared about you, he had your back, and you knew it. Although he was a quiet man, he was a fierce protector of those he loved, and those that witnessed that side of him did not forget it. Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen Ryan Canfield; and his adored daughter, Kristy Canfield. He was predeceased by his cherished son, Matt Canfield, and, at long last, reunited with him in Heaven. Paul's memory will be held close in the mind and spirit of all who loved him, including his large, loving extended family and friends. He would like Mike and Jack to know that he has just gone ahead to secure them the best camping site. As per Paul's wishes, there will be no services. Celebrate him wherever you are with your favorite sweet or a cold beer.

I had the pleasure of working with Paul at Samaritan hospital. On the night shift, I was a registered nurse there.

A few days ago I was discussing working with Paul in the past with a person that I met who also knew him.

Seeing his obituary today, after speaking about him, a few days ago was hard to believe. I hadn´t seen him since 2007 when I left my position at Samaritan.

Paul was very proud and spoke fondly of of his wife and children.

He would tell stories that his wife had a little black dog that loved her so much, that would not allow Paul to go near his wife at all!!
Paul joked about it, but I think, deep down, it annoyed him. Bullied in his own home by a little dog. We laughed a lot about that.

Paul was excellent at his career in the radiology department. He always made sure that his patients were taken care of very well , giving them the best professional treatment possible . He was a true gentleman.

At Christmas once, the ED staff exchanged gifts with him. I gave him a jar of homemade preserves, and you would have thought that I gave him gold. He smiled ear to ear when he saw it, and told me that homemade jam was one of his absolute favorite things in the world, He then went and got a spoon !!!!

Occasionally, he was a prankster, as evidenced by an occasional large fuzzy plastic spider being thrown onto the desk near me or unbeknownst to me, he had placed a potato chip upon my right shoulder and then asked me,
"What´s bothering you? You have quite the chip on your shoulder tonight!!!

I am thankful that Paul made going to work, a very pleasant experience for the ED staff.

My sincerest condolences to his family at this time of his sudden death.

Enjoy heaven, Paul. You earned it !!

Paul was a good one. He will be missed by anyone that knew him. I always treasured being with him and the crew on camping trips. I always thought of him as the professor ,, with his witty comebacks. May the good lord take care of him and mend the hearts of all that he knew.

Dear Kathleen and Kristy .. I am so glad I saw Paul last Saturday .. and finally met you. He talked about you all the time! He was a wonderful coworker, so helpful to me, the best! When not with a patient, I would find him at the computer, playing checkers .. I told him whenever I would hear the the song MacArthur's Park ("old man playing checkers by the tree") I thought of him. All I can say is thank you so much for sharing him with us all .. I will never forget him. Please accept all my sympathies...
