LATHAM - Paul Stephen McElligott, 84, of Latham, N.Y., passed away peacefully on March, 5, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Paul was born in New York City, in 1939, the son of Edward and Elizabeth (O'Shea) McElligott. He was a graduate of Syracuse University, an army veteran (1961-67), and a cartographer for the N.Y.S. Dept. of Transportation for 38 years.
Whatever the job, Paul was always there to help, but he hated the spotlight and preferred to contribute quietly. So much of the work he did for organizations and events went uncredited, and he liked it that way.
Paul was avid reader, animal lover, boy scout leader and volunteer, woodworker, folk music enthusiast, and crossword puzzle purist (New York Times, in ink, often using only the across clues). He had a quick wit, and always loved a good joke, like the one about the toilet and the sousaphone.
After retirement, Paul's greatest joy came from playing his French horn with numerous ensembles, including the Colonie Town Band, Memorial Band, and Brass Choir, and he served as the town band's librarian for many, many years.
Paul is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Mello); his son, Matthew, and wife, Christy; his grandson, Anthony; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Peter; and sister, Catherine. A memorial celebration of his life will be held at the Crossings, in Colonie, on April 21, at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Paul's name may be made to the Save the Music Foundation (www.savethemusic.org).
