Paul Piela Obituary

Piela, Paul EAST GREENBUSH Paul Piela, longtime Rensselaer resident, passed away on April 23, 2021, at Evergreen Commons in East Greenbush after a long illness. Born in Rensselaer, he was the son of the late Frank and Frances L. Piela. Paul was educated at St. John's Academy, Columbia High School and the State University at Albany, where he earned his M.A. in social studies. Paul taught social studies and Latin for 33 years at Schoharie Central School. Although he resided in Rensselaer, Schoharie became his adoptive community, and he was involved in numerous activities and endeavors over the years. At one time he served as president of the Schoharie Kiwanis Club, of which he was a member for over 25 years. He also served as president of the Schoharie Promotional Association. Paul received the DeWitt Clinton Award in recognition of outstanding community service. He spent many years working with the Colonial Heritage Organization. In 1985 the New York State Assembly passed a Legislative Resolution of commendation to Paul for his "many contributions to Schoharie County." December 20, 1985, was proclaimed Paul Piela Day by Schoharie's Mayor in recognition of his participation in Schoharie civic activities. After retirement, for years Paul continued working with the Promotional Association and Colonial Heritage. He worked tirelessly in planning the Annual Antique Show, the Annual Craft Fair as well as the town-wide flea market each labor day. Paul is survived by a number of cousins. Over the years he remained in contact with a number of his former students. To them he was considered firm in his principles, disciplined in his classrooms, and always free with his time. In memory of Paul, please take a moment this summer to let the sun warm your face and plant a flower in your garden for him. Paul's family would like to thank everyone who answered his many calls, called him, wrote a note, sent gifts and/or necessities to him. Paul really did appreciate everyone and every act of kindness that was shown to him. Special thanks to the staff of Evergreen Commons who helped Paul along the way on his final journey. A memorial Mass will be planned for a future time due to COVID -19. Interment in Our Lady of Angels cemetery in Colonie will be private. Bow ties. yellow legal pads, artful cursive hand writing ,great community organizer and dedicated teacher ,son and friend to so many!!!Just some of the ways I will remember Paul Piela!!!When I was a junior in high school he encouraged me to participate in the American Legion Oratorical Contest... An experience I have never forgotten . He believed in me and because of that I believed in myself!!! He is a part of my teenage memories and later adult memories as a fellow colleague and friend... I will think of him as I enjoy my outdoor space this summer...A true treasure... A life well-lived... Be at peace

My Favorite Teacher!

Paul was an amazing teacher and positive presence in Schoharie for many years. His Latin class, which I took as a senior, inspired me to continue Latin throughout college. His dynamic and knowledgeable style of teaching combined with a good sense of humor contributed to his excellence and passion. And, anyone who had Paul as a teacher will also remember his signature blue pen and impeccable cursive handwriting!

Paul continued after retiring to enrich the Schoharie community through his service with the Promotional Association & Colonial Heritage. Paul’s tireless efforts and sincere dedication will long be remembered. He touched so many students and community people, and Paul leaves a very positive legacy. We desperately need more selfless people like Paul Piela. May he Rest In Peace for a life well-lived.

This is my Uncle Paul. My Godfather. He never forgot a birthday or holiday and always wrote he cards in peacock blue ink. We would always guess our gifts before opening. He was consistent, so we made it fun. I am grateful for my childhood memories and he support through my life. Our last conversation was beautiful

Paul Piela was top of the crop for his love for and knowledge of his subject. I felt honored to have been his student, later his coworker at SCS, and also thankful our sons had him as a teacher. May he Rest In Peace
