Peter Kelly Obituary

Kelly, Peter Patrick George III POMPANO BEACH, Fla. Peter Patrick George Kelly III passed unexpectedly and way too soon on October 4, 2021, at the age of 54, in Pompano Beach, Fla., where he lived. Pete is lovingly survived by his four children, Morgan, Austin, Christine and Madison; his mother, Carol Coffey; his brothers, Stephen Kelly and Tommy Giammateo; his sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Ted Chin; his three grandchildren, Darrah, Charlotte and Matthew; his stepmother, Kathleen Kelly; and four nieces and two nephews. Also known as Re-Pete, he was predeceased by his father, Peter Patrick George Kelly Jr.; his stepmother, Sha Kelly; and this past year by his beloved grandparents, Doris and Henry Berben. Pete was born in Albany on July 6, 1967, an easy date to remember he would always say. He graduated from Guilderland High School, tested out of the automotive program at Hudson Valley Community College, and went on to be a mechanic. An avid lover of baseball and a passionate Yankees fan, he attended two World Series playoff games on the same day! (San Francisco Giants and Oakland A's) Pete had a great sense of humor combined with a strong work ethic and passion for helping others. He was a master at building and fixing just about anything, and had a successful career at the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 106, keeping the heavy machinery going and the witty one-liners flowing. His life took a turn following an injury on the job and alcohol addiction, which he struggled with for years. In the end, it took him. He will be missed for all that he was, and for all that he could have been. If you or a loved one is struggling with alcohol addiction, there is free and confidential help available. Visit samhsa.gov or call 1-800-662-HELP today. Pete will be remembered for his great storytelling, his generosity, and the tremendous love that he had for his four children. Calling hours will be held at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave., Colonie, on Monday, October 25, from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. A private burial service with family will take place in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Colonie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: FMB Gift Fund, National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, NIH, 6700B Rockledge Drive, Room 1336, Bethesda, MD, 20892.

People who knew Pete later night not know he was a jock in high school. He was a natural born distance runner, but he put in the work too. I remember him beating me--by a lot--in the Albany County meet, with one shoe. He was a team captain, and he acted like it.
Pete was already a great mechanic when he was 17. He saved me twice by fixing cars that had no business being on the road. (It would have been three times, but that Impala was hopeless.) Before he was 25 he'd already built his hot rod Monza, his hot rod Ranger and his hot rod Caprice, and that was just in his spare time.
Pete wasn't a chatterbox but almost every word he said was funny and devastating, at least when I knew him. In fact I don't think anyone was cooler than the Pete Kelly I knew, when I knew him. Hope to see you on the other side, Miller.
