Peter J. Papp

LATHAM Peter J. Papp, 94, of Latham, beloved husband of the late Harriett Gamage Papp, died Saturday, February 25, 2006 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Peter was born in Mason City, Iowa on July 16, 1911, the son of the late Peter and Anna Teliho Papp. He was raised in Hudson, N.Y. and was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving as a flight instructor during World War II. After his discharge from the military, Peter worked for several years as a pilot for Eastern Airlines until 1948. He then worked in sales for various companies until 1962 when he went to work for Cooks Moving Company and later purchased the business and ran it as an agent for North American Van Lines until his retirement in 1981. After his retirement he worked in various retail jobs until the age of 92. Peter was an avid golfer and a regular at the Town of Colonie Golf course. He was a communicant of St. Ambrose Church in Latham where he served as a usher for many years. He was a life member and the oldest living captain of the C.H. Evans Hook & Ladder Fire Co. in Hudson, having been a member since September 15, 1930. Survivors include his loving son, Kevin Papp and his wife, Peggy Straight of Clifton Park; his brother, Paul Papp of Delmar; his nephew, Edward White of Greenport, N.Y.; his nieces, Mary Ann Granacker of Bethel Conn. and Georgie Ann Gilleran of Calif. He was predeceased by his son, Peter Papp Jr. in 1995. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 10:15 a.m. from the Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Rd., Latham and at 11:00 a.m. in St. Ambrose Church, 347 Old Loudon Rd., Latham where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Francis DuBois, pastor. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. Interment will be in Memory's Garden in Colonie.
