Philip Battaglia Obituary

Battaglia, Philip S. MENANDS Philip S. Battaglia passed away peacefully Sunday, January 22, 2017. He was born in Albany, on July 2, 1929. He was the son of Sylvester F. and Josephine A. Battaglia. He attended Christian Brothers Academy and graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy. After attending Syracuse University, he went to O.C.S. in Ft. Benning, Ga., and then served two years as a lieutenant stationed at Ft. Jackson, S.C. The produce business was in his blood. He learned it from his father, Sylvester, and took over the operation of Caruso, Rinella, Battaglia in Menands, in 1970. He expanded the business to Glens Falls and Keeseville. Phil was proud to be the produce supplier for the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. For the last ten years, he bought and sold produce and much more for Roma Importing. Though he loved all sports, golf was his favorite. Phil had many proud and not so proud moments on the golf course. The highlight of "Batman's" golf career was playing in the 1972 Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic with Hale Irwin. His pride and joy were his grandchildren. He delighted in telling about their accomplishments in school, on the field, on the stage and in their young careers. He was predeceased by his daughter, Anne Beaupre; and his son, Augustus James. He is survived by his children, Syl, Mary Jo Kelly (Ray), Margaret Glassman (Nelson), Tony, Stacie Pappas (Tony) and Philip; and also his daughter-in-law, Anita. Affectionately known as "Pop-pop," he is survived by his grandchildren, Kyle and Devon Kelly, A.J., Michael and Katie Battaglia, Sara and Hallie Glassman, Dana Johnson, Anthony, Kara and Nicole Battaglia and Ian and Amanda Clough; and he was thrilled to welcome his first great-grandchild, Lucy Lee Johnson. Also survived by his sister, Natalie Tessitore; and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Phil's family Wednesday, January 25, 2017, 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Pius X Church, Loudonville. Funeral services Thursday, January 26, 2017, at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Loudonville, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. The Rite of Committal will immediately follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy. Back in the early and mid-seventies I worked as a Masseur for the Fort Orange Club in Albany. Me. Battaglia was a regular to the health club and I always enjoyed his company. His business partner Vince Rinella had a summer home near ours in Sacandaga Park. The fun years. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

I am so saddened for everyone that he has passed away. We are all going to miss him beyond words! He was always so funny and he always made me laugh. As the years would go by when I was getting a little older he said " please do not call me Mr. Battaglia " and I said how about Philly and he thought that was endearing,
seeing that I was Staci's Friend, he has a special place in my heart. I am going to miss giving him big hugs and kisses. Love you, Philly
may you Rest In Peace.

Gone From My Sight
By Henry Van Dyke

I am standing upon the seashore.

A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then some at my side says: There, she is gone!

Gone where?

Gone from my sight.

That is all.

She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to destined port.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at that moment when someone at my side says: There, she is gone! there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: Here she comes!

And that is dying...

Dear Mary Jo & Ray, Tony, Stacy and extended Battaglia family,

Please accept my condolences on the passing of your father and grandfather. He was a wonderful man that was quick to offer a contagious smile and warm handshake. He was a fixture at the Roost and it is a blessing that he is at peace after a tough battle. He will certainly be missed and I am sure he is enjoying his first tee shot on the course of Heaven.

To truly appreciate what a great man your dad was one only had to spend a short time in his company. Perferably on the golf course with Mr. Scaringe and my father. You couldn't help but smile when he was around.
