R. Bennett Obituary

Bennett, R. Gerald Jr., M.D. HAMPTON, N.H. R. Gerald "Jerry" Bennett Jr., M.D., 69, of Hampton, died April 12, 2007 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack. Dr. Bennett was born on December 4, 1937 in Albany, N.Y., the son of Ralph G. and Helen G. (Carhart) Bennett Sr. He was a resident of Hampton for the past five years. Dr. Bennett graduated from Waterford High School in 1955. He then attended RPI and, in 1964, he graduated from Albany Medical College, receiving his doctor of medicine. From 1965-1967, he served as captain in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps in Bangor, Maine. From 1970-1971, he served his fellowship with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover. He was board certified by the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Bennett served at the following hospitals as a staff radiologist: Elliott Hospital, Manchester, N.H.; Mid Maine Medical Center, Waterville, Maine; Columbia Memorial Hospital, Hudson, N.Y.; Samaritan Hospital in Troy, N.Y.; North Country Hospital, New-port, Vt.; Monadnock Community Hospital, Peter-borough, N.H. From 1985-1990, he served as chief of radiology at the VA Medical Center in Manchester, N.H. Due to illness, Dr. Bennett retired in 2001. He moved to the Partridge House Assisted Living Facility in Hampton in 2002. Then, in December 2006, he moved to Bel-Air Nursing Home in Goffstown, N.H. His hobbies were fishing, boating, playing trombone, singing in choral groups and listening to Dixieland jazz and classical music. Members of his family in addition to his mother, Helen G. Bennett of Merrimack, N.H., include two sons, Douglas A. Bennett of Merrimack, N.H., Keith G. Bennett of Goffstown; one daughter, Elizabeth G. Ranalli of Hampton; four grandchildren, Morgan M. Bennett and Eliot K. Bennett of Goffstown, N.H., Sofia E. Ranalli and Nicolas R. Ranalli of Hampton; and one sister, Marilyn R. Malik of Gardner, Mass.; one niece, Tahira Malik of Amesbury, Mass.; one nephew, Jordan Malik of Canton, Mass.; and his former spouse and cherished friend, Abigail A. Bennett of Manchester. Dr. Bennett was predeceased by his father, Ralph G. Bennett Sr. of Waterford, N.Y., who died in April 2006. Calling hours will be Saturday, April 14 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Phaneuf Funeral Home, 243 Hanover Street, corner of Union Street, in Manchester. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home chapel Saturday 3:00 p.m. Burial will take place in East Nassau Rural Cemetery in East Nassau, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Albany Medical College/AMC Foundation, Alumni Annual Fund, PO Box 8928, Albany, NY 12208 in memory of Dr. Bennett. Arrangements are under the direction of the Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium.
