R. Malone Obituary

Malone, R. Anthony "Tony"
VANCOVER, Wash. - Tony Malone, 85, passed away on January 11, 2023, in the loving care of his family in Seattle. Originally from Albany, N.Y., son of the late Eugene J. and Harriet M. Malone, Tony was a man who always made you feel like you were the most important person in the room.
A legend on and off the field, court and track at Vincentian Institute in Albany and the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., Tony treasured his friendships, going back to his earliest days on Myrtle Avenue.
He married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Barbara Gallagher, in 1960. Together they raised six children, starting in Idaho and ending in Washington with four more states in between. Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Air Force via the ROTC program where he served as a missile silo commander. After resigning from the service, he began a career in sales befitting a man who was the master of relationship building. Tony made the greatest friends of his coworkers, clients and all he encountered in his 20 years at Albany International.
Tony was a man of faith who will have his Lord, his loving Barbara, and so many others welcoming him to Heaven. A communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes in Vancouver, Wash. for more than 40 years where he served as a lecturer, greeter and occasional dishwasher. He spent much of his retirement volunteering, especially with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
He was a great support to his children and grandchildren, crisscrossing the country to assist with their lives. He loved to sing, tell jokes and share stories with family, friends and strangers. He liked his beer warm, his eggs runny, and a hug better than a handshake.
He was predeceased by Barbara and his eight loving siblings, including his twin sister, Anne Dollard. He is survived by his children, Katie (Bruce) Pieper, Anne (John) Daley, Maura (Charlie) Robbins, Tony (Vicki Martin) Malone, Nell (Matthew) Ball and Capt. Philip (Monica) Malone (USN); 18 grandchildren, their spouses; and one great-granddaughter, Kennedy. He is also remembered by three sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, and so many friends, all whom he loved dearly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 20, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 4723 Franklin St, Vancouver, WA 98663. The family will receive callers at the church beginning at 10 a.m. prior to the funeral. There will be a memorial Mass for Tony in Albany, NY in the coming months. A notice will be placed in this paper when that is scheduled.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (Vancouver, WA) https://www.svdpvancouverusa.org/ and Meals on Wheels People (Portland, OR) https://www.mowp.org/

What a terrific guy Tony was. I only knew him from Vincentian Institute High School where he was two years ahead of me. He was a remarkable athlete and had a beautiful singing voice. But most of all he was a true gentleman with true concern for the welfare and benefit of all he encountered. He encouraged me to date a particular young lady as I was a bit socially inept back then and needed such support. I have been married to this wonderful woman for 64 years now. Tony was just that way--always a leader and gentleman. May the angels lead him on his way to Barbara and may they enjoy the presence of the Lord together, for eternity.

I´m truly going to miss one of my best friends. Tony always made me feel great when we were together. We actually had a grade school reunion in Vancover about 10 years ago. Tony, Bob McMahon, Frank O´Connor and I spent four days just enjoying our friendship. I know Tony is now with his loving wife Barbra and all our VI classmates that are not with us. I will pray for his dear family.

My twin brother Ben and I walked into kindergarten with Tony and Anne in 1942. We were in the same kindergarten class.
Tony´s obituary shows the same loving thoughts that permeated Tony´s life. He was always interested in his friends welfare, not his own. A big hug from Tony many times lifted me off the ground.
When I read of Tony´s passing, my eyes welled up with tears. In my opinion, there are few with comparable beautiful personality and caring disposition.
I believe our Lord said to Tony, "I´ve been waiting for you Tony, job well done".

Malone family please accept my condolences. Grew up with Tony enjoying his enthusiasm for life as witnessed everyday as he and his sister would skip by my house for school. As we grew older I had the opportunity to enjoy his father's paternal pride as we played baseball and Tony as usual excelled. The fathers sat together with no bigger cheer leader than Mr. Malone. God bless you Tony and bring you the heavenly rest you so richly deserve. bb

I want to echo what Paul wrote above. I too was a starry-eyed 8th grader at VI, hero-worshipping Tony and those other Lions roaring down that field and dizzying their youthful fans on the court and the diamond. The same lions that helped us at the altar with our Latin, coached us from left-handed altar boys to harder right-handed bell ringer altar boys. Tony, along with Lawlor, Corcoran, McMahon and so many others from the magnificent class of 55 were both school and parish leaders. To get a sense of Tony's and classmates' broader influence look at the outstanding VI class just four years later in 1959 and their positive impact on community and country. God Bless Tony, his classmates, and VI.

Tony a High School senior and Star athlete coached our eighth grade basketball team and made a lasting impression on me. Smart, funny, competent and uplifting: those were his talents. That eighth grade team from VI still chats by zoom even though we live different states. We will all be remembering Tony in our prayers.

Oh Tony! What a wonderful ride we shared- with Jerry and Joan and all of our beloved classmates. We were the generation before teenage angst. We had fun and loved every minute. No regrets and sorrow for such long lives. We will be all together again very soon rejoicing with Our Lord and one another. More joy to come. Amen!

I was saddened to hear of Tony´s passing. The thoughtful obituary captured the warm essence of his loving personality. Tony´s life was a life well lived and meaningful. The world is a less rich place when wonderful people pass. My sincere condolences on your loss.
