Richard Callner Obituary

Callner, Richard ALBANY Richard Callner, artist and teacher, died peacefully on August 31, 2007. He was born May 18, 1927 and was raised in Chicago and Benton Harbor, Mich. Callner served in World War II and received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin. He received a certificate from the Academie Julian in Paris and a master's of fine art degree from Columbia University. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship and traveled to Cambridge, England and France. Callner began his long and distinguished teaching career in 1952 at Purdue University in W. Lafayette, Ind. Callner taught at Temple University's Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and was founding director of Temple University's Tyler Art School in Rome, Italy from 1966-1972. Callner came to SUNY Albany to begin the M.F.A. program, where he taught until retirement in 1993. He received a Fulbright Grant and was the first American artist to lecture at the Hermitage in the former USSR. Motifs in his paintings, prints, etchings, sculpture throughout his prolific half-century career span Hebrew, Greek and Tantric mythology and display an extraordinary mastery of color, line and pattern. Callner's landscape and interior paintings reflect his visits to Italy, Yugoslavia, Spain, Russia, Japan, Turkey and the Hudson Valley. He adapted his painting style to the course of Parkinson's Disease by increasing his use of abstraction and employing bolder use of color. Callner was a beloved teacher and mentor to hundreds of students during his career who remained lifelong friends, as did his many associates. Callner's works are in many prestigious private and public collections in St. Petersburg, Russia; Istanbul; Pristina, Yugoslavia; the Albany Institute of History & Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Detroit Institute of Arts; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the New York Public Library; Yale University Art Gallery; Cincinnati Art Museum; Worcester Art Museum; and the University Art Museum, SUNY. Richard is survived by his wife, Carolyn Konoshima Call-ner. They have two children, David and Joanna (Reiko) and two grandchildren, Saya and Isao Callner. A memorial celebration of Richard's life will take place at the First Unitarian Society of Schenectady at 1221 Wendell Ave., Schenectady, N.Y. at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2007.

Dear Carolyn, Joanna and David,
Although we were kids the last time we saw each other my family (dad Marty Malter and Uncle Lew Malter) would talk about Cousin Richard and family as if we saw you all the time. Marty and Lew were so very proud of him and admired his zest for life, art and learning. He will always be remembered fondly by his Chicago cousins. With Love, Sue Malter Morrison

Dick Callner was more important to me than any other of my teachers in seven years of art school. He was an exceptional teacher. He was very real in the classroom and out. He was an inspiring role model; he demonstrated how to fit life and art together.

Dick was my printmaking professor when I was a graduate student at Tyler School of Art (1965-1968). He showed personal interest in my work and treated me like an artist - a young one in training. He gave me hope that with focus and hard work an exciting life in art was open to me. He was quick to learn my strengths and gave me wonderful opportunities to expand on them. I was thrilled when he invited me to go to Italy to be a graduate assistant for the founding year of Tyler Rome.

We stayed in touch over the decades. Even with diminished capacity, his art kept him vibrant. We all need heroes, Dick was one for me.

As Teaching Assistant at UALbany, in 1973, under Mark Greenwold, the Dean asked me to sit (as student rep.)on the Search Committee for a new Department Chair. Ed Cowley would be retiring and a nation-wide search began. Who knew, then, how powerful an impact on our community Richard Callner would be. Not I, but I'm so proud to have been a teeny, tiny part of choosing him. Irreplacable and unforgetable. He is "alive" in my house, bringing me joy every day I look at his work.

My Dad, Robert Wiener, and Richard Callner were good friends at school and Dad told me lots of great stories about the things they got up to.

One time they had to provide "entertainment" for the Green Lantern Food Co-op. They put together a ballet act in which my skinny father was the danseur, while Dick was the ballerina in a tutu that Dad struggled to lift off the ground, never mind over his head!

Another story was the artistic advice Dad gave Dick. He said "Richard Callner" was not an exotic enough name in the art world and advised him to take the name "Drachir Renllac" ("Richard Callner" spelled backwards). It had a vaguely Eastern European tone to it. Clearly, Dick ignored the advice, but we had an original Drachir Renllac hanging in our home for years.

I was just a kid when we visited our cousins in Albany, but through the thick fog of memory, his warmth, kindness, and a sense of wonder seeing his paintings remains.

We're saddened by our cousin Dick's passing, but we're heartened by the memories of our lovely visits with him, Carolyn, Joanna, and David, spread out over many decades in many places. Let's not forget the pink house in Olivet. With all our love, Ron and Katoko

Carolyn, David, Joanna and families,
Uncle Dick was and will always be a hero of mine. I loved him dearly. His passion for life, his artistic view in the realm of all possibilities and his dry care-free wit and humor will inspire me for my lifetime. My heart goes out to all of us in the family on his passing. His great spirit, however, will never-ever die.

Richard Callner painted a world that surpassed the social ideal. Countless numbers of students, apprentices and colleagues have been nourished as much by his friendship as by his art, in a career that was as generous as it was accomplished. I am grateful to have been one of them. To Carolyn, Joanna and David we send our most heartfelt condolences and love. Lisa Vandegrift Davala and Justin and Gabriel Knecht
