Richard Goldstein Obituary

Goldstein, Richard
GLENVILLE - Dr. Richard Z. Goldstein, 86, of Albany, died Tuesday, April 1, 2025, after a three year battle with Alzheimer's. Born to the late Jules and Yetta Goldstein on March 18, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pa., Richard graduated from South Philadelphia High School in 1956. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Temple University in 1960 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966. He married Phyllis (Gordon) Goldstein (z"l) in 1964 and was married for 50 years. Richard's passion for mathematics shaped an illustrious academic career. He taught at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor before joining the University at Albany as a full professor of Mathematics in 1970.
Richard was a jack of all trades. Had a car that needed fixing – call Richard. Had a sink that needed repair – call Richard. Electrical, plumbing, mechanical, woodworking – he did it all. Although nothing gave him more pleasure than working in his garden and sharing the fruits of his labor with his family, friends, and neighbors.
Richard was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Gordon) Goldstein; and son, Paul H. Goldstein. He is survived by his daughter, Heather (Anthony) Linsk of East Greenbush; and his two beloved grandchildren, Shira and Eliana Linsk.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, at Congregation Beth Emeth, 100 Academy Rd., Albany. Interment will follow immediately after at Beth Emeth Cemetery, Loudonville. Shiva will take place at the home of Heather Linsk, Friday, after the Burial.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).

Rich is a very kind, talented, and humble colleague. He likes to walk around in the hall way of the Earth Science building. I have fond memories of discussing math and gardening with him. He likes to talk about his tomato plants and once said that he grew hundreds of them in the backyard. I was quite amazed since I only grow about 6 each season. Rich, RIP! Ron Yang
