Robert DeLeon Obituary

DeLeon, Rev. Robert E. C.S.C. VALATIE Rev. Robert E. DeLeon, C.S.C., 72, died at Albany Medical Center, Albany, on Friday, February 26, 2021, after an extended illness. He was born on April 6, 1948, in Guilderland to Robert E. and Ann Jacqueline (Mabeus) DeLeon. He graduated from the Vincentian Institute, which was associated with St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Albany. The Holy Cross brothers administered and staffed that school from 1935 until it closed. The Holy Cross brothers were instrumental in helping him to discern a call to the religious life. He was received into the novitiate on August 22, 1966, and made his First Profession on January 26, 1968. He made his Final Profession on August 18, 1973, as a Holy Cross brother. In 1971, he was assigned to teach English and Theology at Cardinal Mooney High School in Rochester, N.Y. He continued this ministry until 1978, when he was assigned as director of Campus Ministry for Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Md. During the next three summers, and then fulltime for two years, he earned credits in Clinical Pastoral Education. In 1983 he was assigned as staff Chaplain for St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend, Ind. It was during this time that he was ordained to the priesthood (on June 15, 1985), after earning his Master of Divinity from the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, Ind.). In 1987, Fr. Bob was assigned as director of Pastoral Care for Samaritan Hospital in Troy, N.Y. In 1990 he became director of Pastoral Care for St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, Conn., serving there until 2000. In 2001, he became Chaplain for the Holy Cross Brothers at St. Joseph Center (Valatie, N.Y.) where he has served ever since. He felt completely at home serving with and for the Brothers of Holy Cross, many of whom he knew for just about his whole life. During much of this time (2002 to 2019) he served as Chaplain for the Albany Medical Center (Albany). In his final days, they cared for Fr. Bob after so many years of his care for them. Fr. Bob was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his siblings, Kathleen (Paul) Degener, Thomas (Fran) DeLeon, Richard (Susan Faith) DeLeon, Diane DeLeon, and Laurene Walsh. Fr. Bob is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. There will be a closed funeral liturgy at St. Joseph Center in Valatie. In keeping with current safety guidelines. Burial will follow in St. Joseph of Holy Cross Cemetery on the grounds. A public liturgy will be held once that is possible for Fr. Bob and all those who have died during the pandemic. Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home of Valatie is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions in support of the mission and ministries of the Congregation of Holy Cross can be made to: United States Province of Priests and Brothers, Office of Development, 500 Washington Street, North Easton, MA 02356-1299 or online at https://donate.holycrossusa.org

Ponce, I just heard the news 5 minutes ago and I'm in shock. I'm so sad to hear this. You were always there for me, from teaching me English, to teaching me how to drive, to being in my wedding. I've been blessed to have you in my life. We lost a good one and heaven gained and angel. RIP my friend until we meet again.

Brother Bob was one of those special teachers who left their mark in your life and memory. I still see him gliding through the halls of Cardinal Mooney HS. May his perpetual light shine forever.

As a student of Father Bob from Cardinal Mooney 74-78 he left a great memory. He was really a good guy that connected to his students and looked like he continued a great coarse after Mooney. Bless him!!

I remember him mostly as Brother Robert, he was my high school English teacher and was my home room teacher my senior year. He had long sideburns and looked very young. I enjoyed his quotes and sermon on a stick each week. I am sure he was a blessing to those families in need at the hospital he served God well.

Special prayers for Father Bob's family. He was so loved at Holy Family Parish in Fairfield. It was
near St. Vincent's. Father Bob could always bring a smile to someone. His quick wit added a special something to his homily.
May he be at peace.

Fr Bob always walked onto my unit at Albany Med with a smile and a good morning. We shared great conversations over mediocre cafeteria breakfasts, and he helped me find peace when my new path as an RN felt daunting.

No finer man I ever knew in my life who effortlessly found the divine in each and every one of us and everywhere he went. Always ready with a shoulder, an ear, an uplifting prayer in your toughest moments at the bedside. Every staff member sought comfort from his presence as the glue patching devastated families back together long enough to find strength in their faith nearly shattered by tragedy. He was a man of God for everyone he met. He proclaimed jokingly I was his cross to bear to challenge his patience... his humor was his signature trademark. His Sermon-on-a-stick, he told me, was a quick few words for busy Christians-he won me over with these quotes and I followed his posted sermons. The words that were put down, were a glimpse into his life experiences, his true fabric. He was an icon at Albany Medical Center. His laughter will long echo off those walls and his life forever be remembered. Godspeed you home, Padre! You are sorely missed!

Father Bob was a wonderful man who became a good friend to us. He always took extra time for my Mom and accommodated her without making her feel conspicuous. We are saddened that we have lost a friend but know he is at peace and resting in his well earned place in Heaven.

You were so loved and appreciated by your family, friends, students and everyone you comforted during their time of need. Your laugh was infectious, sense of humor infectious-you made us all laugh- your love given freely and all were welcome in your life with your open mind, arms and huge heart. You were a true blessing to all who had the honor of meeting, knowing and loving you. As much as you will be missed, there are so many souls in heaven welcoming and needing you now.

Having you as a brother in law, Bob, was truly a blessing. You read family dynamics and put so much in perspective. God improved countless lives on this Earth by steering them to you. Rest well with Mom and Pop...Laurene and Bibba...and in the blankets of love you gave to your patients over the years. I'll miss knowing you're out there!

I am so sorry that Fr. Bob has had to leave behind so many who loved him. He answered his calling in this life in a way that few of us are able to do. I pray that those who knew him well can find comfort in his devotion.
