Roy Harvin Obituary

Harvin, Roy Paul Jr. TROY Roy Paul Harvin Jr. peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 25, 2018, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, surrounded by his loving family. Roy, also known as Paul by his wife, Junior by his paternal and maternal family, Daddy by his daughter, and Papa by his grandchildren, was born on March 14, 1953, in Albany to Roy Paul Harvin Sr. and Helen (Addison) Harvin. While growing up in Albany on Catherine Street, Roy attended Giffen Elementary School, Cathedral Academy, St. Joseph's High School, where he played basketball, and Philip Schuyler High School. On December 3, 1975, Roy was united in holy matrimony to his wife Carol, in Troy. To that marriage was born one child, a daughter Natasha, whom Roy named after his favorite cartoon character. Roy served in the United States Marine Corps. From January, 1973 until October, 1985 and was honorably discharged. During that time, Roy, who was a rifleman, received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and M16 Expert Badge. Among other things, Roy was a Marine of the Battalion Landing Team, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, where he served in the 2nd Platoon. During his deployment to the Mediterranean, Roy visited several countries, including Italy and Spain. He and his fellow Marines were recognized for their professional ability and self-sacrifices. Roy retired from the City of Troy, Department of Public Works, after 26 years of service. Roy was an avid bowler for many years with the Toppers; however, everyone knows his true passion was fishing. Roy was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8758 of Troy, where he served as commander for many years. Roy was also a member of the International Free and Accepted Modern Masons, and was the former secretary of the Hudson River Frontier Missionary Baptist Association, Laymen's Ministry. Until his passing, Roy was a member of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Troy, where he served as chairman of the Trustees Ministry, vice chairman of the Diaconate Ministry, assistant adult Sunday school teacher, and member of the Male Chorus. Further, Roy was a member of the Polish-American Club in Troy; member of the CSEA Retirees Local 999, where he served on the activities committee; and member of the Eagles Club in Troy, where he served as champlain and recently elected trustee. Roy is survived by his wife Carol (Small) Harvin of Troy; daughter, Natasha M. Harvin-Locklear, Esq. and son-in-law, Timothy M. Locklear, both of Wynantskill; two granddaughters, Skyler Elizabeth Harrington and Autumn Je'Zelle Locklear of Wynantskill; his one and only younger brother, Jerry Harvin of Buffalo; two aunts, Carrie Lee Burrison of Ridgeland, S.C. and Elma Grady of Albany; uncle Rodney (Joan) Addison of New York City; and several siblings-in-law, David Kennedy of Syracuse, John and Angelina Moore, Albert and Theresa Blankenship, Kathleen Small-Lopez, John Fish, and Rhonda Small, all of Troy. Roy is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Helen Harvin; father-in-law, Reverend Jake Small; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Small; and two sisters-in-law, Jeanne Small-Fish (John Fish) and Dr. Zella M. Small (David Kennedy). Roy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, nephew, uncle and friend to all that knew him; he will truly be missed. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 1, at 11 a.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 2900 Fifth Ave., Troy, with Reverend Charles U. Barber Sr., presiding. Viewing hours will commence at 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

Carol, Natasha and Loved Ones,

I remember the first time I met Roy at the Small's residence before I became engaged to Jeanne Small. We immediately started ragging on each other: I liked Roy from the start, he was like a brother to me. (although we did not communicate often, he was never far from my thoughts ;)
Roy was a great man, I will miss his sense of humor and fellowship!
God Bless You Carol, Natasha, family, friends and anyone who's life was blessed with Roy's presence.
I miss you Bro, RIP and thanks for the life you shared with us all.

Love,
John and Aonyaih Fish

To My Family,
Cousin Carol, Natasha & grandchildren. Cousin Roy was a charmer, he had wonderful heart. If he could help you he would. He loved his family beyond the clouds; I know that God's got him. He is singing in the holiest of choirs now! Sing & rest on cousin Roy. We loved you but God loved you so much more, he needed a good, diligent worker like you up above. God's always got a blessing. Family it will be so hard but with faith we will get through this sorrowful time; cousin Roy will forever be a part of our lives. My last family memory was Natasha's birthday party, our family had such a loving time together. RIP Cousin Roy
