Shirley Hartling Obituary

Hartling, Shirley M.
NISKAYUNA - Shirley M. Hartling (nee McCargar) passed away peacefully, at St. Peter's Hospital, on September 4, 2024, after a short illness. She was born on February 27, 1926, and grew up in Queens, N.Y. An only child, her father died when she was 14, and her mother never remarried, so they were quite close.
Shirley became the first female supervisor for the New York Telephone Company, and worked there until her retirement, at age 62.
She married Matthew Tierney, in 1949. She met her second husband, Arnold Hartling, when they were both working at New York Telephone Company and married in 1973; theirs was an inspiring love story and they were inseparable.
Shirley was predeceased by her loving husband, Arnold Hartling; and beloved daughter, Beverly Mitchell (nee Tierney); and is survived by her children, Dana Guerra (nee Tierney), Marc Tierney, Valerie DeLaCruz (nee Hartling), Jyl Graves (nee Hartling), Cynthia Hartling and John Hartling; as well as her cherished grandchildren, Dante and Jesse, Shannan and Brian; and great-grandchildren, Tommy and Cate.
Shirley was fiercely independent, was always stylish and smartly dressed and with Arnold enjoyed travelling all over the world, especially Ogunquit, Maine. Her beautifully furnished home featured many watercolor paintings from galleries there.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Please sign her guestbook at www.McveighFuneralHome.com
