Stanley Dziuban Obituary

Dziuban, Dr. Stanley W. Jr. MENANDS Dr. Stanley W. Dziuban Jr., 68, of Menands passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2015, at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Elizabeth Ann and Col. Stanley W. Dziuban Sr. Stan proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Special Forces Medical Corps from 1967-1970, primarily in the Canal Zone, Panama. An honor graduate of special forces medical training, he received U.S. Army Southern Command recognition for distinguished achievement and top honors in all of his education and training programs. Following his service, Stan received his B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971. He then attended Yale Medical School, earning his M.D. and graduating cum laude in 1975. He was the recipient of the Frank Parker Prize for the Yale graduate with the best qualifications as a successful practitioner. Stan served his residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. Dr. Dziuban was a partner in Albany Cardiothoracic Surgeons, PC. He practiced in many of the local area hospitals, including St. Peter's Hospital, Albany Medical Center, Albany Memorial Hospital, Ellis Hospital and the Stratton V.A. Medical Center. When Stan first entered MIT, he was influenced by his mother's love of medicine as a surgical nurse and his father's love of engineering, but was not sure which direction to take. Midway through his engineering studies he answered the call of his country and enlisted as a U.S. Army Green Beret Medic. It was his medical training and wonderful mentors during his service that sparked his interest in being a surgeon. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he re-entered MIT and confirmed his desire to pursue that goal. His experiences started a long and rewarding career as a cardiothoracic surgeon in which he fulfilled his passion to help and heal others. Dr. Dziuban practiced in Albany from 1982 until his early retirement in 2005 due to illness. His special focus during his career was the analysis and implementation of best surgical practices. He led the efforts of a multi-disciplinary team to implement changes which transformed the program at St. Peter's Hospital into one of the best in New York. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons also utilized his work in their national database as a key component in their establishment of quality practice standards. The same determination and passion for his life and work as a physician guided Stan during his extended illness. He was able to dedicate this time to nurture and guide his sons, William and Gabriel Dziuban, through to their high school graduation and first year at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. It was the overwhelming love for his sons that gave him the strength to experience a lifetime of joy of being their father and to prepare them for their futures. He is remembered by his family as a loving father and dedicated provider, and by his many patients and colleagues as an exceptionally capable and caring physician. Stan touched the lives of many, both personally and professionally. He will be greatly missed by all. Stan was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth Ann and Col. Stanley W. Dziuban Sr. Survivors include his sons, William and Gabriel Dziuban, and their mother, Jo Dziuban, all of Menands; brothers, Robert (Nora) Dziuban of Alexandria, Va., Stephen Dziuban of Colorado Springs, Colo., Richard (Sharon) Dziuban of St. Charles, Ill.; sister Maria Dziuban of Mission Viejo, Calif.; stepdaughter Hilary (John) Justino and their sons, Ian and Aidan of Loudonville. Stan is also survived by six cousins and nine nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at 10 a.m., at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 23 Crumitie Road, Loudonville. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Tebbutt & Frederick Memorial Home, 633 Central Ave., Albany. I served with Stan in the 8th Special Forces Group in 1968-69. He was a bright, capable soldier and fine man.

In July 2001, my husband and I had the good fortune to meet Dr Dziuban. Thanks to his persistence [even when the result of a pet scan indicated the low probability of a malignant tumor, and even when it took 2 ½ hrs to find my husband's cancer] he saved my husband's life. There was a light at the end of the tunnel, and that light was Dr. Dziuban. There were never adequate words of thanks that either of us could express, but he will always live on in our hearts. God Bless this wonderful man. Our deepest condolences to his family at this time of their loss.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Stanley Dziuban. He was a great mentor, extremely intelligent and always strived to do his absolute best for his patients. He was a very gifted surgeon who kept his composure during emergency and crisis situations. He knew how to direct each health care professional to perform emergent duties to eliminate chaos and confusion during critical situations. During my 30 years as an operating room nurse, I learned to respect and advocate his values and strageties as a cardiovascular surgeon. Dr. Dziuban was empathetic and determined to deliver his unsurpassed skills to provide the best possible medical care. He was innovative and insightful. He was a master of his craft. I cherish the memories when we would perform pacemaker implantations when neither of us needed to utter a word to each other during surgery because his expectations were predictable and greatly appreciated. He was also a loving and doting father. I met Gabriel and William (his twin sons) on a few occasions during lunch break at the hospital. At the young age of eight, his sons were very articulate and obviosly well educated to say the least. I always knew that Gabriel and William would excel at any profession they chose because of their fathers influence and coaching. Dr. Dziuban possesed great problem solving techniques. He has helped me to resolve many conflicts in my career without predjudice or judement. A funny ideal we both shared was how to load a dishwasher. I found myself rearranging my dishwasher load after my husband had loaded it because it differed from my perspective. Dr. Dziuban expressed to me that he shared the same appreciation. I always chuckled about our common interest about this task. I also remember the time when Dr. Dziuban told me it was a waste of my talent to leave the clinical setting of the operating room to pursue a mid-level mangement position. In hindsight, he was correct. One of the most important events Dr. Dziuban wanted to live for was the graduation of high school for Gabriel and William. I am so glad he was able to participate in this son's lives. In closure, I can say I respected Dr. Dziuban to the fullest and I know he was a great asset to his profession. I know Gabriel and William will continue to make thir father proud as he always wanted only the best for them. My heartfelt sympathaies go out to his sons, I take comfort knowing Dr. Dziubans legacy will be immortalized by his adoring sons. Gabriel and William, you are the heart and soul of your fathers life. He loved you very much and was extremely proud of both of you. Good luck in your future endeavors.

Dr Dziuban was #1 in our book. He saved our father's life back in 1993, 2001 & 2002 of lung cancer, I have the most respect for this man, and he will truly be missed by our family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time. He is an angel.
