Stephen Blydenburgh Obituary

Blydenburgh, Stephen
SCHODACK - Town of Schodack, Stephen Anthony Blydenburgh Jr., 58, died peacefully, and with great strength, surrounded by his loving family, in the home that he built, on November 14, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Hudson, N.Y., and raised in Nassau, N.Y. Stephen graduated from Columbia High School. In 1989, he started a lifelong career at National Grid, where he proudly served as a Chief Line Mechanic Hot Stick. He worked many hours with his fellow union brothers to ensure that the community's power was maintained and restored. He proudly educated the community on live wire safety through demonstrations at local schools and events. He worked with the NYS Police to educate recruits on safety protocols regarding the dangers of live wire exposure. He ended his career as an Eastern Division Safety Advocate. He found great joy in ensuring that the lights stayed on! The light of his life was his family. Married to Ingrid for 31 years, he cherished every moment with his sweetheart. They were blessed with two amazing children, Caitlan and Stephen. His family was his world, and he would move the world to do anything for them. He took great pride in supporting his children in all of their endeavors; loudly cheering them on as their biggest fan from the stands and in life, forever and always.
Growing up, he spent summers on Lake George, and he was very proud to later own a "Notch" on the Lake, where many memories were created boating with friends and family.
Steve was a person who would drop anything for anyone; all someone had to do was ask and it would be done. He formed friendships everywhere he went and had a wide circle of people who loved him. He could be spotted anywhere on Schuurman Road "putzing" around on his tractor, mower or golf cart. He had a core group of friends with whom he shared Friday night "driveway beers" and annual Daytona 500 trips. This core group was a tight knit circle, whose support and friendship meant the world to him. He believed in giving back and serving his community. He served in many community outreach programs beginning close to home, building the Green Meadow playground. He worked tirelessly to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House, which was a cause near and dear to his heart. He made sure that the Albany and Lake George Ronald McDonald homes were adorned with beautiful lights for the holidays, bringing joy to families facing difficult times. Stephen is survived by his wife, Ingrid; daughter, Caitlan; son, Stephen; mother, Elizabeth Blydenburgh; sister, Patti Cioffi (Joseph); brother, Glenn Dollar; sister and brother-in-law, Dawn and Jody Hadley; nieces, Emma and Brooke Hadley; nephew, Jeremiah (Tracy) Crandall; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends. Stephen was predeceased by his father, Stephen A. Blydenburgh Sr.; his grandparents, Edgar and Margaret Blydenburgh; and grandmother, Dorothy Kakule.
The family would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to all the physicians, nurses and staff from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York Oncology Hematology, Albany Medical Center and Community Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region, 139 S. Lake Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12208, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Sarcoma Research.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation hours Wednesday, November 19, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., at the William J. Rockefeller Funeral Home, 165 Columbia Tpke., Rensselaer, N.Y. 12144.

My heart goes out to Ingrid, Caitlan, and Stephen. Just a few months ago, I was chatting with Steve at our 40th high school reunion. We both grew up in Nassau, and he was asking about my mom (who also knew his dad). I was shocked to hear of his passing. It's hard to believe it. He was a good man and was taken from us too soon. I'm in Boston, so I can't attend his services, but my thoughts are with your entire family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Stephens family. It's really heartbreaking to lose another classmate. When I think of Steve my thoughts go back to the playground at DPS. Rest in Peace Steve.
