Steven Sutton Obituary

QUEENSBURY Steven M. Sutton, 53, died quietly at his home Sunday afternoon, April 17, 2005 in the company of his family and friends. His long illness brought with it a profound sense of love and peace, something he was able to share with all that knew him. Born December 29, 1951 in Newburgh, he was the son of the late Stanley and Sally (Sundstrom) Sutton. He attended Lake George Methodist Church. He met and married Donna Stickney while in college in 1971. Steve graduated from New Paltz High School in 1969. After graduating from the State University at Plattsburgh in 1973 with a degree in business administration, he worked at Harris Intertype Corporation in Champlain, N.Y. While living in that area, Steve and his wife Donna purchased a farm with the intention of boarding horses. However, in 1976, Steve co-founded Sutton's Marketplace. Born from the original concept of a fruit stand, his strong leadership helped create the business it is today. He was a man of vision; the planning and execution of new business ventures brought him great pleasure. Steve was always quick to acknowledge and honor the efforts of others. His generous spirit and compassionate nature created a supportive work environment that encouraged all to do their best. He was just part of the team and his presence will be sorely missed. Steve's commitment to the Queensbury community was evident in his work to develop the Queensbury Business Association, for which he served as both president and board member. His contributions through his own business benefited many local organizations and charities. He also served on the board of directors of the Adirondack Rodeo. A firm believer in the balance of work and play, Steve excelled in both. Adventurous, he always sought the limit of his potential in whatever he did. Steve was an avid water and snow skier, and some of the happiest moments in his life were spent sharing these passions with his children. Golf, boating, travel and music were just some of the things that brought him pleasure, but competitive team roping was the challenge he loved most. Steve leaves his wife Donna; son, Gabriel R. and his wife Olivia (Porter) of Queensbury; two daughters, Jane E. of Bolton Valley, Vt. and Sally L. of Queensbury; two sisters, Sue Torelli and Sherry Dominick and her husband Dennis; one grandson, Owen W.; his mother-in-law, Sherle Stickney Sutton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and countless wonderful and caring friends. Funeral services and burial will be held privately for the family. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2005 at the Singleton-Healy Funeral Home, 407 Bay Rd., Queensbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steve's memory to: the Fresh Air Fund, 633 Third Ave., 14th floor, New York, NY 10017 or Glens Falls Hospital Foundation, C.W. Cancer Center Recliner Fund, 12 Warren Street, Glens Falls, NY 12801 or Double H Hole in The Woods Ranch, 97 Hidden Valley Road, Lake Luzerne, NY 12846.

I was truly saddened to learn of Steve's passing. He was a friend to all during our high school years and beyond. I remember his love of horses and his quick smile. He will be greatly missed by all his former New Paltz High School classmates. My deepest sympathies to his entire family.

I was blessed to see Steve one more time at our 35 year class reunion last summer. We had a nice chat and talked about the good things the years had brought us. He was the same sweet caring person I remembered back in Jr. High. My prayers are with his family at this time of great loss. Sincerely, Dutchi
