Thomas Dorato Obituary

Dorato, Thomas A. Sr. GUILDERLAND Thomas A. Dorato Sr died Monday, April 6, 2015, at Memorial Hospital. Born and raised in Delmar in 1936, he was the son of Thomas John and Marjorie Dorato. He attended Bethlehem schools. As a young man, Tom proudly served for several years as master sergeant in the National Guard while raising his family in Guilderland with his wife Barbara. He worked for the family owned Hospital Television Systems until 1979, then worked at RCA as a TV technician until 1985. He established Dorato's Restaurant in 1985, which he operated with his sons until his retirement in 2010. Tom very much enjoyed his family and friends. Active in the Guilderland Elks 2480 as well as many organizations centered around food and wine (Chaine des Rotisseurs, Les Amis d'Escoffier Society and Conferie des Chevaliers du), he had a wide circle of friends whose lives were made better simply by knowing him. Equally happy whether sitting at a multi course fine dining table or stirring a pot of pasta fagioli for his friends, his zest for life will be sorely missed. He was the father of Thomas A. Dorato Jr. (Patricia), Michael J. Dorato Sr. (Ellen), Susan Loraine Heaney (John), and Catherine J. Lalley (Thaddeus); grandfather of Ferris, Travis, Thomas John, Nicholas, Michael, Owen, and Avery; longtime companion of Martha A. Candido. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the critical care unit at Albany Memorial Hospital for all their compassion and professionalism. Funeral services Saturday, April 11, 2015, at 10 a.m., at Christ the King Church, Westmere, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will immediately follow the Mass at Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery, Glenmont. Relatives and friends are invited and may visit Friday, April 10, 2015, 4 to 7 p.m., in Christ the King Church, Westmere. It seems like only a few days ago we were sitting with Tom in Dorato's Restaurant planning our Bethlehem Central Class of '55, 60th reunion this fall. We will miss Tom for his generosity, his story telling and the welcoming kind of person he always was. Our prayers and condolences go out to all his friends and family. Peace be with you.

Tom, Patty, Michael and Ellen, I have no words that can express the sorrow felt at this time. I will always have great memories of evenings at the restaurant as well as the picnics at the house. I hope the Lord will comfort you in this difficult time. This is indeed the end of an era.

Dear Aunt Martha and Family,
I am so saddened to learn of Tom's passing. No matter the time in between, he was always so warm and welcoming when we saw each other. I am so glad that I was able to see him with you a few months back as we spend a great night singing and laughing and enjoying the family and friends that make life so special. Tom was a decent, kind and caring man who will truly be missed by all of us who loved him. God bless you in these difficult times.

Mike & Tom, there will always be one thing I'll always remember about Doratos. Sitting at the bar by myself and out of the blue your dad would walk up and we would talk, sometimes we wouldn't hear one another but we both enjoyed the conversation.

Ellen, what a great host and friend Tommy was to my father, and also to me. His place was "the place to be" for our dinners, never without uplifting words from him over almost 20 years we went there. He brought the joy of life in his own way, and God bless him for that.
