My Omi carried herself like a lady, with her shoulders squared, chin up, head held always high. I remember her dignity and grace.
She smiled easily, taught me the chicken dance while laughing with her friends, and took me to Tanglewood and the New York City Ballet. I remember her joy.
She talked about the Black Forest, picked flowers and showed me how to find wild berries. I remember her sense of wonder.
She explained how Vivaldi's Four Seasons represents the stages of our lives. I remember her wisdom.
She knitted and quilted and sewed. I remember her resourcefulness.
She taught me how to thread a needle and stitch in a straight line. I remember her patience.
She let me play with her makeup, try to style her hair and go through a lifetime's worth of personal treasures. I remember her openness.
She would slip my hand into her fur muffler on cold winter nights and let me wear her sweaters in public, even though they were too big. I remember her warmth.
She hid Easter baskets when I was too old to believe but young enough to need the attention. I remember her thoughtfulness.
She bought me my first teddy bear, gave me socks with the words "you're number one," praised my poetry and pretended I could draw and sing. I remember her support.
She said that when life knocks us down, we have to lift ourselves back up, by our own bootstraps, if necessary. I remember her strength.
She took my mother and I into her home when I was still in a crib. I remember her love.
