Victor Sgambato Obituary

Sgambato, Victor S. Sr. LATHAM, N.Y. Victor S. Sgambato Sr., 89, entered into eternal life on Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home in Albany. He was the beloved husband of Lucia "Molly" Javerone Sgambato who died on May 12, 2003. Born and educated in Gloversville, he was son of the late Salvatore and Maria Farina Sgambato. Mr. Sgambato attended Washington & Lee University in Washington, DC. He resided in Glens Falls for several years and had been a resident of Latham since 1971. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Army Special Forces. He was recreation director of Colonie Youth Center from 1969 to 1979. At the same time, he started the Latham Senior Citizens Group. Previously he held similar positions in Canajoharie and later Glens Falls. After his retirement, he became a tour director for White Star Bus Company of Reading, Pa. while, simultaneously, working for Cooperative Extension, presenting workshops which provided education on shopping for and preparing balanced meals in a financially efficient manner. He was a communicant of St. Ambrose Church in Latham; a member of the Colonie Elks Lodge #2192; a past president of the Latham Kiwanis Club, and a past lieutenant governor of the capital division on the New York State Kiwanis. Victor's hobby, since he was 15 years old, was magic and he studied with Harry Blackstone Sr. He presented hundreds of exciting and entertaining magic shows for audiences throughout upstate New York. Surviving Mr. Sgambato are his sons, Victor (Robin) Sgambato Jr. of Fort Plain, N.Y. and Anthony M. Sgambato of Latham; three grandchildren, Krystin Grant, Scott Sgambato and Kym Dopp; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Sgambato. Funeral on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Ambrose Church, Latham, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at Bowen & Parker Bros., 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham on Tuesday from 4 until 8 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Community Hospice of Albany County, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.
