Walter Scott Obituary

Scott, Walter Williams Jr. M.D. ALBANY Walter Williams Scott Jr. M.D. of Albany, died on Monday, December 23, 2019, five days after his 56th birthday. He was associate professor of surgery at Albany Medical College, Section of Thoracic Surgery at the time of his death. Dr. Scott was the son of Walter and Vaughan Scott of Richmond. He is survived by his two children, Walter Williams Scott III and Leah Royster Scott; their mother Angela Royster Scott; one sister, Mary Wingfield Scott of Richmond, her partner, Rusty Cadaret; a nephew Robert Hargroves Walters; niece Grace Vaughan Scott; and dear girlfriend, Anne Giaever. His mother and brother, John Wingfield Scott, predeceased him. Known as Walkie to childhood friends, he was beloved for his adventurous and generous spirit and his talent for cultivating deep friendships. He graduated from St. Christopher's School in 1982 and earned a B.A. in religious studies at the University of Virginia in 1986, where he was an Echols Scholar and a member of Sigma Phi. He completed the Vermont Paramedic Training Program in Brattleboro before entering the University of Virginia School of Medicine. After graduating in 1992, Dr. Scott held residencies in general and cardiothoracic surgery at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He held posts in Greenville, N.C. and Gainesville, Fla. before moving to St. Simons Island, Ga. where he continued his surgical practice in Brunswick. When he relocated to Albany in 2015, he became a highly knowledgeable and passionate advocate of the benefits of robotic over traditional surgery and was a mentor to others. He quickly found friendship and respect within his new community, where he was recently awarded the Ally-Sheridan Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award at Albany Medical College. A beloved member of the Gloucester Banks community, he enjoyed summers on the York River where he shared his love of boating, fishing, kayaking, cooking, and gathering friends over dinner on the screen porch or at the Urbanna Oyster Festival. An Eagle Scout, he also enjoyed backpacking, camping, scuba diving and snowmobiling. Walter gave his time and expertise to the Boy Scouts of America, Hospice of the Golden Isles, Christ Church Frederica, and the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, among others. His loss is unfathomable to all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 11, 2020, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 815 E Grace St., Richmond, Va. To those wishing to make memorial contributions, the family suggests MAP International (map.org) at 4700 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA, 31525 or a charity of your choice.

Formed a warm friendship with Dr. Scott as a medical device executive while he was in Brunswick, GA. We soon discovered we were both from Richmond and we atteded rival high schools, he, St. Christopher's, and me, Benedictine.

I had the privilege of observing his considerable surgical skills in the OR. A commited surgeon and diligent acvocate for his patients.

I will miss his easy smile and sharp sense of humor. I thought of him recently while passing his childhood home on Three Chopt Road in Richmond. My condolences to his family, who he spoke of with great love and affection.

Brunswick, GA 2008 & 2009: Dr. Walter Scott was a good friend and a special human being. He was the first person I met in Brunswick, and we worked together for two years on special projects for Hospice of the Golden Isles. Perhaps because we both had recently lost our beloved mothers and were still grieving their deaths, we bonded. Dr. Scott was brilliant, generous, and his soul was kind. What a tragic loss for his precious children and their mother, extended family, and many friends. His untimely death was devastating, but he will never be forgotten.

Dr. Scott performed a lung surgery on my father 4 years ago when he was diagnosed with lung cancer. It was such a terrible and upsetting time for our family but Dr. Scott made it much more bearable. I just learned of his passing today and am very saddened to hear. He truly was an amazing MD and surgeon. He made my family and myself feel so at ease at my fathers appointments. His bed side manner was truly one of a kind..he will be missed by all his patients i'm sure and fellow colleagues.. so truly sorry for your loss.

Today my son got very good news on his lungs at his wellness visit. We both immediately said thank you and God Bless Dr. Scott. I was so shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. In 2018 both my teen son´s lungs had collapsed without warning. Dr. Scott performed the surgeries and when rare complications never seen before arose, he promised us that he wasn´t giving up. He consulted with doctors around the country and the world. The idea he had worked! I still remember his compassion and warmth as he said to my son in the hospital "Next year, I´m going to see you driving here!" A wonderful doctor and man gone too soon. My deepest sympathy to all of his loved ones. Because of you Dr. Scott my son is here with me and I´m eternally grateful. Rest In Peace.

I am just shocked to just learn this news... Dr. Scott was a great doctor to have at Albany Med in NY. I needed to have chest tubes inserted, and parts of my 2 collapsed lungs removed in 2018. He did save my life before my condition got worse. In a heavenly prayer, I will always say thank you for doing your life saving work on your patients including myself. You are missed.

On December 8, 2008, in Brunswick, Ga, Dr. Walter Scott saved my life thru emergency surgery. Every time I saw him after that I would tell him, "You know you will always be my hero." He said,"You know you don't have to do that for the rest of your life." I replied, "Oh,but I do." And I do.

Walter will be missed tremendously here in the Albany area. I met him at the YMCA five years ago swimming in the morning and we became gym friends immediately. Always willing to help everyone in anyway he could.
My daughter was a first year general surgery resident at a hospital in CT and Walter was always willing to answer my residency questions and met her when she did a rotation last summer at Albany Med. His Christmas parties were tremendous. I will miss you Walter thank you for your presence in my life. Heaven must have needed a cardio surgeon with a heart of gold.
