William Morrison Obituary

Morrison, William VOORHEESVILLE William Morrison, 95, passed away at home on October 5, 2018. The second child of Euphemia and David Morrison, Bill was born in Girvan, Scotland on September 28, 1923. The family emigrated to the United States in 1927, and settled in Fairfield, Conn., close to the ocean and beaches he loved, and where he met his future wife, Lois Jane Schildhauer. Bill joined the Army in 1943 as a member of the elite skiing troops of the 10th Mountain Division. After training at Camp Hale in Colorado, he was sent overseas to combat the enemy in the mountains of Italy where he quickly rose to the rank of staff sergeant and served with distinction, earning the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Veteran's Badge. After the war, Bill began college at the University of Connecticut, then transferred to the University of Denver, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and started his twin careers of education and amateur theater. Bill taught elementary school in Portland, Ore. for two years before returning to the east coast, where he considered himself extremely fortunate to find a fifth grade teaching job at Slingerlands Elementary School in the Bethlehem School District, just one week before school started. He remained there until 1970, when he transitioned to the new Middle School in the District as a sixth grade teacher, after researching the concept of middle schools. At that time he was also a founding member of the New York State Middle School Association. He remained at the middle school until retiring from full-time teaching in 1986. Theater played a large role in Bill's life, beginning with a summer theater class in 1950. The Slingerlands Community Players, a highly regarded theater group that inititally performed at Slingerlands School, then moved to the Bethlehem High School, drew Bill in early on, and he was extremely active with the group in the '60s and '70s as both an actor and a set designer. Bill remained active in theater productions in Bethlehem even after the community organization was disbanded, by working with the Bethlehem High School Theater program as the scenery advisor, mentoring students as they built the sets for their productions. He held this role up until last year. Bill was an active member of the Boy Scouts since he was eight years old, except while serving in World War II. He first served as a scoutmaster while still in Fairfield. He served as a longtime scoutmaster of Cub Pack 73, and of Boy Scout Troop 73 in Voorheesville. He also held the Silver Beaver award. The Heldeberg Workshop held Bill's interest for more than 45 years, in which he served as volunteer, teacher, and board member, and close to 20 of those years as chairman. As chairman, Bill was involved in most of the building projects undertaken by the workshop. A long-term supporter of the 10th Mountain Division National Association, Bill was the president of the Upstate New York Chapter for a number of years, being involved in ceremonies at Fort Drum in upstate New York and at Whiteface Mountain. Bill also enjoyed a long association with the Presbyterian Church in New Scotland in a number of roles, including singing in the choir. Survivors include his children, Dave (Astrid), Bruce, Malcolm (Margaret), Bonnie (Brendan), Heather (Jennifer), Robert (Janet), Duncan (Robert), and Stuart (Liesl); his grandchildren, Ian (Kim), Justin (Dana), Patrick, Conor, Alex, Katy, Casey, Braeden and Lukas; and his great-grandchildren, Hunter, Skylar, Denver, Wyatt, and Lucy. Bill is also survived by his brother, Edward, and his sisters, Jean and Catherine. He was predeceased by his wife, Lois; his sisters, Margaret and Flora, and his parents. Relatives and friends may call at the Reilly and Son Funeral Home, 9 Voorheesville Ave., Voorheesville on Friday, October 12, from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian Church in New Scotland, 2010 New Scotland Rd., Slingerlands on Saturday, October 13, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Bill's memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS, 66675-8517 (or woundedwarriorproject.org), the Presbyterian Church in New Scotland endowment fund, or a charity of your own choosing. reillyandson.com

I first met Bill through my association with BSA Troop 73 in Voorheesville. Bill, Tom Roe, Howard Coughtry, Bob Shedd, and several other "older men" formed a strong corps of senior troop leaders and committeemen who were outstanding role models for both incoming scouts and volunteer adults. Bill mentored me when I became Scoutmaster of the troop, just as over his many years of service to the troop, he quietly mentored scores of young scouts in his patient and caring way. He had a calming presence during meetings and campouts that was remarkable, as were his people skills and knowledge of the outdoors. I will never forget Bill, and offer his family my sincerest sympathies. May he rest in peace, after a long life, well lived.

Mr Morrison was my 6th grade teacher at Slingerlands grade school in the years 1963-64. He was the person that told us about President Kennedy's assassination. He calmly and quietly made the announcement, so not to scare us. My brother, Chuck Hayes, was one of the lucky ones to have him as his teacher in 5th and 6th grade. Chuck loved him. Mr Morrison recently spoke at Slingerlands GS 75th reunion, the memories came flooding back seeing him at the school where I had him. My sorrows to his family and loved ones. Rest In Peace, dear friend. I will miss you.

Bill was my sixth grade science teacher. And in all respects my first favorite teacher. I thought of him many years later as I shipped off to basic training. He was the first war veteran I had truely revered and respected immensely. It warms my heart to know he was here 95 years and we are all better for men like him. My condolences go out to his friends and family. Rest well old friend

Duncan et al.,
The first time I met Bill some 30 years ago, I believe he was on a ladder, helping to build the set for Schenectady Civic Players' The Women. In fact, most of the times I saw Bill he was working hard on sets for plays, luaus, and other community endeavors. Despite his amazing work ethic, he always had time for a winning smile and a few minutes of quiet conversation. Having read the other comments here, I only wish I could have been one of his students. Rest in peace, Bill, and may warm memories of you bring your family comfort in the coming days, months, and years.

Mr. Morrison was the best teacher I had ever had. Over the years I would regularly think of him and 5th grade. He taught all of us how to think, and that was more valuable than anything.

Mr Morrison was my Scoutmaster when I joined Boy Scout Troop 73. He has been one of the most important people in my life. He was Scoutmaster of our troop for 9 years from 1973-1981
Mr. Morrison was a man of character and instilled scouting values in me that are everlasting.
MAY THE GREAT MASTER OF ALL SCOUTS BE WITH US TILL WE MEET AGAIN'

Mr. Morrison was a kind and wonderful man and both my sons enjoyed his help and guidance at both Heldeberg Workshop and the BCSD Theater program for many years. So glad my granddaughter got to meet him when she attended HW this past summer. Mr Morrison is proof that one special soul can make a difference in the world.

I had the great fortune to have Mr. Morrison for both the fifth grade and the sixth grade at Slingerlands (1961 and 1962). Every student is lucky to have one or maybe even a few great teachers in their lives and I count Bill Morrison among the best. His knowledge and teaching of what we then called Social Studies (maybe they still do) opened my eyes and helped inform all that came next in my education. I communicated by letter to Bill in the past year (after more than 40 years of being out of touch) and his memory of me (and my sister Judy who preceded me in the classroom) was remarkable.

The Morrison family should be very proud of his legacy and his impact on thousands of students. I extend my condolences.

Roberta and I are sad to hear of Bill's passing. We talked to him just this past spring at Schenectady Civic Players and marveled at how lucid and sharp he was.Condolences to Duncan and the whole family. We knew Bill (who was Roberta's teacher at Slingerlands) through the Slingerlands Players where his work was exemplary. He was a wonderful man who will be sorely missed.

Here is a gentleman who will be greatly missed by anyone who knew him in their lives. I was a student across the hall in elementary school. While I liked my teacher, I always held Mr. Morrison in very high regard. Bill Morrison would have made a great President of the United States, I always felt.. God Bless you and your family Mr. Morrison. Jim Adams, Slingerlands.
