Barbara Jean Ellis Carney, 72, went home to be with the Lord on January 2, 2009 after a long illness.
Barbara was born October 23, 1936 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the second of six children born to Charles B. and Corrine Clark Ellis. As a child growing up in Cleveland, Barbara was a member of Second Tabernacle Baptist Church where she developed the strong spiritual foundation that remained with her throughout her life.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Constance Remson; and brother, Gregory Ellis, Sr.
Barbara graduated from John Adams High School in 1954. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio University in 1958, and her Masters of Social Services Administration degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1985. Her passion for reading and education is part of the legacy she leaves with her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and students in the Oasis tutoring program. Barbara's other life passions were family, cooking (from scratch!), traveling, helping anyone in need, and spending time with friends.
While attending Ohio University, Barbara met her future husband, Lester. She moved to Akron, Ohio after their marriage in 1960 where she later joined Prince of Peace Baptist Church. Barbara and Lester have three children and five grandchildren.
Barbara's greatest assets were the depth of her wisdom and breadth of her spirit; her greatest gift was her willingness to share it all with others. Her innate ability to know just what to say and do served Barbara well in all aspects of her life, including her career as a social worker. Barbara began her professional career as a caseworker for the Cuyahoga County Welfare Department. Her career also included positions as a probation officer for the Summit County Juvenile Court, a social worker for the Teenage Parent Center, and a family counselor for Family Services of Summit County. Barbara retired in 1999 after 10 years as the Program Director of the Teenage Parent Center (a program of Family Services of Summit County).
Barbara was a Silver Star of the Zeta Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She joined the sorority in 1982 and remained an active member until her death. In addition to the Oasis Program and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Barbara continued to serve her community after her retirement as a member of the United Way Allocations Committee, a facilitator for the Mother to Son Program and as a member of the WIC Advisory Committee.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Lester, Sr. of Akron; daughters, Corrie Carney of Shaker Heights, and Leslie (David) McGee of Columbus; son, Lester Jr. (Angela) of Ravenna; grandchildren, David Jr. and Courtney McGee (Columbus), Kyla Carney, Jeremy Seeden and Alyssia Caples (Ravenna); sister, Patrice Ellis; and brothers, Charles Ellis, Jr. and Ronald Ellis, all of Cleveland; niece, Charlotte Remson Cook (Cleveland); sisters-in-law, Doris Gilmer, Alice (Mark) Smith, and Carol Blackwell, all of Columbus; goddaughter, Kelley (Marcus) Walton of Montclaire, New Jersey; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, family and friends.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, January 8, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, 529 West Thornton Street, Akron, OH 44307; and Friday, January 9, 2009 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Prince of Peace Baptist Church, 844 Garth Avenue, Akron, Ohio, 44320. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 9, 2009 at 12 p.m. at Prince of Peace Baptist Church. Interment immediately following at Glendale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Akron Chapter of the American Cancer Society. Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 986 Winton Ave., Akron, OH 44320.

Dear Family, I am so sorry to hear of Barbara's passing. My prayers go out to you and yours. There are no words to ease the hurt from the lose of our mother.
I remember our periodic visits when I would come East. I especially remember Barbara & Les coming to Sandusky, Ohio for my wedding. You see, my mother's sister was married to one of Les' uncles. I guess you call that "shirt tail" relatives. (smile)
May the Lord continue to lift you all up and give you strength to get through this time of trial.

To Les ,
I was so shocked to hear of Barbara's Transition. My prayers are with you and your Sweetheart's family. I still see her smile that cheered me when we were both students at O.U.
She dwells in the Mystery
of the Great unknown
Fluid, beautiful and free.
She dances with the wind and relishes each breath
Ecstatic today
She sings with the joy
of the planets and stars
She laughs with the waves and the sea.
For she is the spirit
Forever unfolding
Unbounded, eternal
And free.
Unbounded, eternal
And free.

Dearest Les and Family,
My Heartfelt Sympathy to you and your loved ones.
Reflective Thought:
Your loss may grow easier to accept,
as time goes by..
But it does not get better -
For the loss of a loved one is to great to easily overcome.
May it help to know friends feel your pain...
And will always share the true essence of being that will always comfort you...
May prayers ease your pain during this most difficult time.

Carney-Ellis Family,
What can you say about a woman so regal, so caring, so beautiful, so absolutely wonderful? What can you do to ease the sorrow of family and loved ones who have a broken heart? No words can express what my Godmother meant to me and so many others. No deeds can heal our broken hearts. But when we look at each other; when we see the "YOU" that lives on in all of us, we are comforted a little.
Your loving and devoted husband, with whom you shared a magnificient life worth living and celebrating! Your amazing children, who are shining examples of the type of people we should all strive to be! Your beautiful grandchildren who will carry on your legacy of kindness and goodness. Your adoring family and friends who called you sister, auntie, soror, girlfriend and are all better people for having known you. And all of the many people who's lives you have touched in such a deep and meaningful way.
When we all come together and celebrate the marvelous life you lived. When we celebrate your gift of sharing your life with us. When we celebrate your homegoing, we will find comfort in each other. And we will find peace in knowing that you are in the loving embrace of God.
No words can express how deeply my heart and sympathies go out to the Carney-Ellis family. May the care and support of loved ones ease your sorrows and I pray God's blessings to help heal your hearts.

Dear Les:
We were deeply saddened to hear of our loss of Barbara. As you know, she was a classmate and close friend during our days at Ohio U. At this time we reflect upon the words found in the 24th Psalm (v. 3 - 5).
"Who can ascend the hill of the LORD?
and who can stand in his holy place?
Those who have clean hands and a pure heart,
who have not pledged themselves to falsehood,
nor sworn by what is a fraud.
They shall receive a blessing from the LORD
and a just reward from the God of their salvation."
Through the passage of time, we will all learn that, regardless of how much we miss her, Barbara is in that better and holy place. We send you our deepest love and sympathy.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved relative Barbara Carne. She was a friendly and generous person and a favorite cousin of my late father, Vernon Clark, and his siblings in Cleveland. When I was fresh out of college and starting work as a journalist at the Akron Beacon Journal, Barbara and Les reached out to me, sharing their valued advice and guidance to me as a newcomer to the city. Their help at that challenging time will never be forgotten.
Along with my sisters, Christine Clark Evans and Norma Clark I offer heartfelt condolences.
