Charles Humber Obituary

HUMBER Charles H. Humber, age 92 passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010. He was born May 10, 1917 in Americus, Georgia, but lived most of his life in Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Humber was a member of St. Catherine's Episcopal church. He leaves to mourn 3 children; sons Charles H. Humber, Jr. and Michael D. Humber, daughter Mary Ann Harvin, 3 grandchildren-Melissa Humber, Corey Harvin and Casey Harvin. I was at St Catherines today and saw the stained glass window and thought of the family. My wife Marie and my MIL Caroline Johnson were Members of St Catherines from the beginning.

I know and have known many wonderful people in my life. "Charlie", ham radio callsign WA4EYU, was in the top tier. He was The "Offical Bulletin Station" for the American Radio Relay League for more years than I can recall, always copying the signal through Morse Code (CW), rather than the lazy man's way of reading the text online, he was always on time for the weekly bulletins in support of all of Jacksonville's hams and residents in emergency services.

Charlie was a keystone of the golden age of ham radio in Jacksonville, and a better gentleman has not been born. If you knew him, you would have thought him to be in his 60's or 70's, not 90's!

73, Charlie. You cannot be replaced.

To the Humber Family:

My most sincere condolences on the passing you your parents. The children and grandchildren are most fortunate that your parents lived a long life.

I have been friends with Mike and Melissa for many years. I recall that Mike would speak often of Helen and Charlie fondly. Mike and Charlie entered many races and both finished well.

Mike if I can ever be of assistance, please just let me know.

May God bless each of the Humber family.

Charlie was a long time friend and fellow Ham Radio Operator. I met Charlie in 1973. He was active in the local radio clubs, he always had a smile to share. I remember the first race I entered, Run-To-The Sun in Orange Park. Charlie was there, about 67 years of age, and very healthy. I tried to run along beside him but he left me in the dust! He cheerfully shared with me that he couldn't run and talk to which I had to chuckle.

Charlie was a wonderful person. The world needs more guys like him!!
