I remember few things about my grandfather. He was a happy but a quiet man for the most part. I remember few visits with him where he actually spoke often as I was fairly young when I was around him. I rember sitting in a tin washtub basin of his and getting my finger stuck in a box of candy while at his house.

I remember him offering us a quarter to rub his head as children and that he didn't seem hesitant to put us in line if we were running around being too rowdy.

The biggest things I can say I remember is he had tattooed the symbol of the Merchant Marines on his forearm and I remember sitting at his feet as he told us about the role he played in WWII.
He served with 3 other siblings in the War. One of the most marking things, to me, was when he recounted the story of his ship coming under attack.
It sank. I don't know how quickly or how many survivors. I just remember supposedly oil leaked out of his ship and was lit on fire atop the water as he and his fellow crew members tried to escape.

I was told he had to swim nearly 1 mile under water to escape the flames as the oil was burning on the surface above him.
He didn't seem to talk much of the war other than that... just happily awaited the day where he could reunite with his wife, who died almost a year to the day of my birth.

He loved to camp; he had a camper that attached to be towed on his vehicle and took us camping from time to time.
He was always very warm and welcoming as I remember.

He believed: "What manner of men ought ye to be? Even as I am." and "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth." May I ever strive to be like him, Gene

May God be with all of the family during this difficult time. Uncle Corless would always stop in and see my mom when she was in the hospital, which was quite often in her last 2 or 3 years. Now my daddy has all of his brothers with him again. May he rest in peace.
