David Queen Obituary

QUEEN David Taylor (Thundershield) Queen, 56, of St. Augustine, died peacefully June 12, 2009, after fighting cancer for two years with natural and alternative therapies. He was born November 4, 1952 in Jacksonville and graduated from Lee High School, where he was on the golf team and enjoyed surfing. He received an AA from Brevard College, where he competed in cross country, and a BA in psychology from the University of North Florida. He spent many memorable years in San Francisco before returning to Florida. He exercised the healing arts as a Licensed Massage Therapist. As a Community Activist he worked passionately and tirelessly for peace, justice, human and animal rights, ecological, African American, and Native American causes. His thought- provoking letters appeared often in the Florida Times Union, the St. Augustine Record, Folio Weekly, the Florida Star, the News Leader, and the Cherokee One Feather. He found joy in spending time outdoors bicycling and hiking, feeding rescued critters at HAWKE, and identifying native plants with healing properties. He is survived by his loving parents William and JoAnn Queen, and twin brother Don Queen of Jacksonville, brother and sister-in-law William Queen Jr. and Lynn Ellen and their children Thomas, Anna and Philip of Richmond VA, cousins Joe and Sheryl Kush of Columbia SC, and a large extended family. The family wishes to express its deep gratitude to all those who helped David during his illness, especially Carl, Julie, Mary, Pam, Sonda, Stetson, and Tom. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday July 5 at 2 pm; call friends for details. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257, or to HAWKE, PO Box 188, Elkton, FL 32033, or to the Stetson Kennedy Foundation, 1523 State Road 13, Fruit Cove, FL 32259. My cousin sent me the information about our mutual cousin, David. We are related through Maude Francis Taylor's sister (Nettie) and brother (John Harold). What a shame to have learned about David too late; what a legacy he left, though, and how proud the family and friends must feel to have known him. Please email me at nsayed6266 at aol.com if you would like to communicate. My name is Nancy Merrill Sayed. I don't feel comfortable giving information about my cousin (who found the information about David), but know she'd love to talk to you as well. God bless and keep you all.

It is hard to think of David and keeping my remarks simple and brief. He has impacted my life as few others, dispite the brevity of our relationship (mid-1970's/mid-1980's). I guess to name him One of the Most Unforgettable Characters I've Known, in a rather long life, comes about as close to brevity as I can manage. He was rare, very special, an original. I'll always be grateful that we were friends. Because of David, I have many rich memories of California, a whole lot of writing and wonderful photos stashed away!
My fondness for his family goes with this blessing -- I wish you all much comfort and love. Warm hugs from "David's old friend Evelyn." (There's a blog @ myspace.com/evbel) -- My best to Don, Billy, Bill and JoAnn. It was very good to have met you all.
Sincerely,
Evy
