Donald Beattie Obituary

BEATTIE Donald A. Beattie, 84, passed away on August 22, 2014, in St. Johns, Florida. Don was born in Staten Island, NY October 30, 1929 and grew up in Norwood, New Jersey. He attended Columbia University on a NROTC scholarship. In the Navy he worked on the Underwater Demolition Team and then earned his wings and became a carrier pilot. He flew in the Navy reserve until 1972. In 1958. he earned his Master s degree in geology and geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines. He went to work for Mobil Oil Columbia, South America for 5 years. In 1963 he moved his family back to Maryland and joined the Apollo Space Program at NASA as a lunar geologist where he planned and managed the lunar surface experiments. Don and his wife, Ann, have lived in Jacksonville since 1996. Don was active in the local Audubon chapter, he worked with the school board on growth and planning. Don is preceded in death by his brother Tom Beattie and his sister Margaret Berger. He is survived by his wife Ann, two sons, Tom Beattie, his wife Mary Beth, and Bruce Beattie, and two grandsons, Travis Beattie, his wife Katie, and Kyle Beattie.
