out of curiosity I searched for Ed's name. I was saddened to hear that he had passed away.I was the band director at George C. Marshall HS when Ed was the football coach there. What a coach he was. Ed was a renaissance man. He had wide-ranging interests and music was one of them. He visited my classroom and rehearsal frequently and encouraged my students. The mere fact that he took interest in what we were doing was and is an anomaly. I learned a lot from Ed and I thank him for the interest that he showed in me and my program. Ed was a rare man and i know his players benefited greatly due to their contact to him RIP Ed.

Greatest conversation of my life was sitting next to Ed and Roberta at a UVA baseball game in Jax. He had on the classic orange hat with V, I said at least he had the right hat and we talked for 4 hours. I commented on his watch and he said it was from the Peach Bowl when he was on Georges coaching staff. He was so casual about his success. He said we had some success there in describing his HS coaching years. Roberta said George Welsh said he was the best hire he ever made. He told me he coached at VMI and I said I remember a validictorian speach where the honoree said his greatest memory was beating UVA 3 years in a row. Ed said, I was there then. I started putting it together and realized he was the key piece to a lot of football success. I knew him for 4 hours and knew he was a great man. He loved all his players regardless of color in a time when it was easier not to. I paused often so as not to dominate his time, but we always started back up talking football and the things I wondered about UVA football history. It was like old days sitting listening to my dad and uncle. I called him a couple times and he always gave me time, though I was intruding.
I treasure that conversation and replay it often. Was he a greater man or greater coach, Yes.
My heartfelt condolences. A great and honorable man who will be well missed.

Coach Ed Henry was one of the greats in Va High School Football history. I played for him for 2 years at Robinson High 1980-82. My freshest memories are the butt chewings he gave me during practice and games! LOL. My family moved away from VA after my junior year, and I never had the chance to see Coach again. The memories came flooding back after seeing the movie, "Remember the Titans" back in 2000. Of course I had no knowledge of Coach's coaching career when I was a young high school kid, but I am honored to have been one of his guys! He was always fair towards his players, and as a African American, I never once witnessed slight or unfairness due to race from coach Ed Henry!
I still can hear you yelling my name, "DION, get your head out of your....."! "Catch the darn ball!"
You are missed coach! Thanks for believing in me when I didn't believe in myself!

Dear Roberta and family,
It with sadness that I have just learned of Ed's passing in October. I have fond memories of your entire family as I taught some, if not all, your children at Robinson as a teacher of mathematics in seventh grade. I have always appreciated the reading class you taught for adults. May God give you His Peace and Comfort.
Much love in Christ,

Carol, I was so sorry to learn of your Dad's passing. I know how difficult losing your father can be. Although I didn't know your Dad personally, I feel like I did through all the people I knew who had the pleasure of being coached by him and admired him. My heart goes out to you all. Blessings, hugs & prayers to your family @ this difficult time. Coach was one of my coaches my final year @ UVA. Saw him just a few years ago @ a Spring Football Reunion. Told him he was much better looking than his movie counterpart. We shared a wonderful laugh. He's quite a guy & will be missed!!!

Coach Henry set high standards for the players he coached, but they were the same standards he followed himself. His players respected him and reached goals they may have felt could not be reached. Rest in peace coach!

Roberta and Family,
So, So, sorry to hear about Ed, the world will miss him. As a member of the Annandale 1966 State Championship team, Ed showed us that sports lessons can lead to a very productive life. One real memory I have of Ed was that he and Roberta would open up their home on Sunday evenings to watch game film and serve soft drinks and cookies. God Bless, Ron & Georgia Klingensmith

I am a Atom player who played at Annandale in 1959.
I lost my Coach and best friend this week. In 1959 he built our football team. He taught us how to be winners, to work hard and to be humble. To me he was like a father, a role model and in the last 18 months a cherished friend. Everything Ed Henry touched was made better by his being there. I spent a day a week with him for 18 months. I saw a real fighter, I continually maintained a physical contact with him, I saw his bad times and tried to keep him grounded but most of all loved this wonderful man. God had a team in Heaven and needed a Coach. He took the best he could find.
Rest in Piece my friend, you will need to because the entire 1959 team will join you again. You showed me a type of bravery seldom seen as you fought this insidious disease. I will never forget you.

To the Henry Family,
I want to offer my condolences to you all, and I join my VMI teammates, managers and trainers in saying that a fantastic person and a great coach has left us.
The first time I met Coach was as a walk-on at VMI spring practice in 1966 when he was running a drill for linebackers and I was playing hamburger on the other side of the ball.
It was hot and dusty and we were all getting pounded and were sweating and out of breath and wondering why in the world we were doing this. But Coach was there (pure, classic Coach Henry!) mixing encouragement and tips on technique with one-liners and expletives (Remember Kiss my wrist?) And we were all suffering miserably but we were enjoying every single minute of it.
He was great and even though he was not my position coach, he was a real inspiration for me.
In the 1980's we wrote when I was coaching football here in the German Football League. In 1997 we met at the NFL Europe training camp in Georgia when he drove up and spent a couple of days. It was great seeing him again.
My kids here watched "Remember the Titans" - "Gegen Jede Regel" in German. I actually saw it first in German - and I told them about Coach Henry. Just two weeks ago, my younger daughter and I watched it again and I showed her Coach's picture in the VMI yearbook.
Coach, thanks for everything. You will always be with us.

In the late 1960s at VMI, "Coach Ed" was the Defensive Coordinator, and as player on Offense and Specialty Teams, I never played directly for him. Nonetheless, he took an interest in me as a player and as a person. He provided me with coaching tips that I still remember, and the personal relationship lasted beyond the VMI years. Ed has been publicly recognized as a "winner" on the field, and the same can be said about him as a husband, father, and friend. Along with Roberta, he led a very good life and was a positive force in the lives of many people. Wherever he was, Ed was "The Man."

Nothing but good memories of Coach Henry. As a football manager I felt a close connection to the coaches who we worked so closely with, usually setting with them on buses and planes. Also talked with the wives and kids at practice.

Ed Henry was my coach at VMI in the late 60's and he was a wonderful influence even on those players that played on offense. (He was our Defensive Coordinator!) I remember watching the movie "Remember the Titans" years later and how well they showed the great Ed Henry in that movie. He was a man of integrity and well respected by everyone. We all loved playing for Coach Ed, he was one of a kind! Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family!

Dear Roberta and the Henry Family,
I regret not being there for you since I just had an hip replacement several weeks ago.
Ed taught me a lot and was like a second father growing up at Annandale High and being on his first Champ. team in '59 and being his first Timmy Award winner. I owe an awful lot to him and you all. I think I represent all the guys on the '59 team is saying God Bless you all. He will always be with us.
Love to all,

Superlatives are not enough for Ed. He was the mastermind behind the fabulous 1967 VMI Keydet defense that held UVA to 18-13; Boston College to 26-13; and an unforgettable final 12-10 victory over Tech! A guy who could take smaller/slower kids and coach them up - really making them believe to achieve! He had the quintessential essence of the VMI Spirit! He shall always be coaching on the playing field of my memories! Thanks for the great experience of a life-time to be coached by Ed Henry.
