EDWARD SULLIVAN Obituary

SULLIVAN Edward James Sullivan, Jr., MD, passed away unexpectedly, Monday, August 26, 2013. He was born February 22, 1920, the only child of Edward James Sullivan, Sr. and Sara Elizabeth Gaskill in Trenton, NJ. A child of the Depression, his family sacrificed to give him a wonderful education. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1942 and received his medical degree from Georgetown University in 1945. He actively served as a medical officer in the United States Navy from 1943-47 and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War from 1950-51. He continued in the Naval Reserve and retired at the rank of Commander. In 1954 he joined James G. Lyerly Sr. in the Lyerly Neurosurgical Group, Florida s first neurosurgical practice. In 1958 he was one of the founders of the Florida Neurosurgical Society, serving as president in 1969. He was very active in the medical community, serving as the Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Vincent s Hospital from 1958-64 and St. Luke s Hospital from 1964-77 and 1979-85. He was the Chief of Staff at Cathedral Rehabilitation Hospital from 1973-74 and St. Luke s Hospital 1977-78. He was a neurosurgical consultant at the Veteran s Hospital, Lake City, FL. and the US Naval Medical Center Jacksonville, FL. He was an excellent diagnostician before the invention of many current medical diagnostic procedures. He was well-liked and respected by all who knew him. He retired from active medical service in 1985 but continued to serve the medical and legal communities through his work with the Florida Bar Association and the Fourth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. He was an active, energetic person who enjoyed life, traveled the world, and could converse intelligently on most any subject. He was an avid supporter of the University of Notre Dame, a founding member of the Notre Dame Club of Greater Jacksonville, and its local scholarship fund. He raised three generations of Fighting Irish football fans (and hopefully more to come). Even into his nineties he was extremely intelligent and sharp witted. His advice was sought often and always valued. We will miss him so! Dr. Sullivan is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years and mother of his three children: Mary Mignonne Martin Sullivan, and his second wife of 12 years and childhood sweetheart: Catherine M. Goodson Sullivan. He is loved and survived by his wife Tressie Wilhelm Sullivan and his three children: Edward J (Susan) Sullivan III, Odessa, FL; William P. Sullivan and family, Jacksonville, FL; Kathleen E. (Robert) Mellor, Chuluota, FL; grandchildren: Daniel, Matthew (Holly), Sean Sullivan, Kelly (Brian) Conlin, Adam (Adriana Oliveira) Harvey, Kevin Sullivan, Michele, Bobby (Nancy), Paulette, Patrick Mellor and Christopher Goodson Wells; four great-grandchildren: Ethan and Annabelle Sullivan, Brady and Parker Conlin and Leon Harvey. Step-children: Christine (Dennis) Kiszka, Michael (Linda) Goodson, and Richard (Mary) Goodson, Amber (Neil) and Brian (Delta) Kelly and their children. In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated and interred at Arlington National Cemetery. A private family remembrance will be held at a later date. Belated condolences to the family of a man who, though I never met him personally, so obviously shone with a zest for life and a rare and prized ability in all he undertook. A man proud of his Sullivan heritage and who helped make the world a better place.

Thoughts are with you...your dad certainly had a full life-professionally and personally. Losing a parent is tough, no matter how long we've had them with us, it always seems too soon.

I was a classmate of Ed III at Bishop Kenny and remember the Sullivan family. My Father was also a Naval Officer but he left us in his early 70's. Dr. Ed was a fine doctor and man. John

Tressie and Ed's family:
I'm saddened for your loss, for everyone's loss. My memories of Ed are of someone who was always smiling and energetic. I could talk for hours with Ed and never tire of the conversation. We have all been fortunate to have our lives enriched by having had Ed in them. We have all been blessed to have warm and loving memories of our experiences with this good friend. He will live in our hearts and memories for the rest of our lives.

Ted, Sue and family,
Dr. Sullivan will be missed very much at the Antonini family gatherings! Though we didn't see his professional side at these gatherings we saw a man always smiling, laughing and happy to be around all of us! I remember after marrying into the family finding out his profession and marveling at how down to earth he was! He was beautifully humble! God's blessings and peace to all!

Tressie & Ed's family,
I worked with Ed initially and was informed he was considered the "doctor's doctor." It wasn't long before I recognized why he had earned the respect of medical colleagues as well as attorneys and the community at large.
He was incredibly wise yet totally down to earth in addition to being an extremely gifted surgeon. This applies to his technical skills but also his ability to diagnose and sort out the important facts in addition to how to treat patients/families. I will always recall his assisting me with a very difficult challenging case in which he really taught me some things I will never forget.
He was an incredible human as well as physician and will be dearly missed. We recently talked about getting together but never seemed to have the time; this shows you can't wait.
I will miss him as will many others. Great man!

As a lawyer who worked with Dr. Sullivan for many years I will say to his family that he was a true professional and one who many of our current physicians could emulate.
